Men's Volleyball Begins MIVA Action this Weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW men's volleyball team will be in action this weekend as the Mastodons will begin MIVA play by hosting Lindenwood and Quincy. The first match of the weekend will be played on Friday, Feb. 1 against Lindenwood at 7 p.m. The second contest will be against Quincy on Saturday, Feb. 2.
ABOUT IPFW
The Mastodons are now 3-2 overall after picking up a home win over Lourdes last weekend. Junior Eddie Rivera leads the team in kills with 54. He is averaging 2.8 kills per set and has posted an attack percentage of .229. Omar Rivera has been setting Eddie Rivera up as he leads the team with 167 assists.
Andy Sellan, Bryan Saunders, and Ramon Burgos have all impacted the team with 30 plus kills on the season. Sellan hurts opponents with his serve ability as he enters the weekend with eight aces. Burgos and Saunders play great defense at the net leading the team with 16 and 15 blocks respectively.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Lindenwood is the newest member to the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. The Lions are 0-3 after being swept by Ohio State last weekend 3-0 (14-25, 22-25, 22-25), 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 20-25). Their most recent loss was a 3-2 setback to Missouri Baptist.
Colin Hackworth leads the team in kills with 37. He is averaging 3.3 kills per set and is hitting at a .226 clip. Hackworth is also second on the team in digs with 16.

Tim Schmidt sets up the offense for Lindenwood as he leads the team with 101 assists on the year. Schmidt is a dual threat as he is also able to score points for the Lions as he leads the team with seven service aces.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Quincy is off to a 4-3 start to the 2013 season. The Hawks competed in the King Tournament during opening weekend and went 1-2 in competition with Mount Olive, Belmont Abbey and King. Quincy improved each match as they lost 0-3 to Mount Olive in the opener and then took a 1-3 loss vs. Belmont Abbey to end the doubleheader. The Hawks chalked up their first win of the season with a 3-2 win over King.
Quincy defeated Missouri Baptist 3-1 on Jan. 15 and improved to 3-2 overall with another 3-1 win, this time over MSOE. The Hawks most recently lost 1-3 at Carthage, but snapped back to record a 3-1 win over Hannibal-LaGrange on Wednesday. Quincy will take on the Ball State Cardinals on Feb. 1 before facing IPFW on Saturday night.

LAST TIME OUT
IPFW defeated Lourdes on Friday night 25-22, 27-25, 25-20 to improve to 3-2 overall. IPFW served the ball very well against the Gray Wolves as they ended the night with eight service aces.
Bryan Saunders and Anthony Randolph paced the offensive attack with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Saunders hit .500 against Lourdes and also chipped in with four blocks. Randolph came up big in clutch situations and led the team with five blocks on the night.

Lourdes came out swinging in the first set to grab a 4-0 lead. A service error from Oliver Cizmazia put IPFW on the scoreboard but the Gray Wolves maintained a 7-2 edge early in the game. IPFW went on a run and tied the game at 10-10, and then took their first lead of the set at 14-13.
The remainder of the first set went back and forth, but IPFW came out with a 22-20 lead. Eddie Rivera recorded a kill and a service ace down the stretch and senior Anthony Randolph sealed the win with a kill.
The second set was down to the wire as neither team could break away. The Grey Wolves led 22-20 late in the action, but a service error Trevor Lund followed by a kill from Randolph quickly tied the score.
Lourdes grabbed a one point lead after a kill from Frank Craig and IPFW burned a timeout. The break worked as the Grey Wolves sent a serve into the net and then recorded an attack error which helped IPFW go up 2-0.
The third set was tied 19-19 when IPFW went on a 5-0 run to take control of the match. Randolph and Rivera each recorded kills to spark the run and Randolph walked away with the game-winner as IPFW improved to 3-2 on the year.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
In his first week in an IPFW uniform, freshman Andy Sellan was named the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week.
Sellan led IPFW with 22 kills over the weekend as he hit at a .471 clip while only committing six errors on 34 total attacks. His best match came against Cardinal Stritch, where he recorded 12 kills on 16 attempts in just two sets of action. Sellan added three digs and three blocks against the Wolves.
The freshman jumped into the starting lineup for each match this weekend and responded with two service aces, five blocks, three digs, and one assist. He currently leads the team with 26.5 points.

2013 MIVA PRESEASON COACHES POLL
IPFW was picked sixth in the 2013 MIVA Preseason Coaches Poll. The Mastodons totaled 28 points, one behind Ball State for fifth, and seven from fourth-place Grand Canyon. Lewis was picked to finish first with 62 points and six first-place votes, while Loyola (54, one first place vote), and Ohio State (52, one first place vote) finished in a close race for second place. Conference newcomer Lindenwood (20) and Quincy (8) rounded out the eight teams in the conference.
2013 MIVA PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
IPFW junior Eddie Rivera was named to the Preseason All-League team. Rivera had 240 kills and a .230 attack percentage to go with 187 digs, most for a non-libero on the team, while adding 39 blocks and 26 aces.
TOUGH COMPETITION
Three MIVA teams appeared in the 2013 AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll. Lewis was picked fifth after finishing the 2012 season with a 26-7 record. Joining the Flyers on the poll was Loyola and Ohio State. Loyola was 19-12 last year, Ohio State was 21-9.
AVCA HALL OF FAME
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that IPFW head men's volleyball coach Arnie Ball has been selected as a member of the 10th class of the AVCA Hall of Fame.
The AVCA annual recognizes individuals who have reached the pinnacle of their profession and the sport, with the AVCA Hall of Fame. This, the 10th annual AVCA Hall of Fame class features Bill Neville, Carol Ruso, and Rudy Suwara, in addition to Ball.
The four were inducted into the Hall of Fame on Dec. 13, 2012 at the Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon, held in conjunction with the 2012 AVCA Annual Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.
