
Mastodons Drop #MIVAvb Quarterfinal at No. 10 Loyola Chicago

CHICAGO - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball season comes to a close after falling in four sets (27-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-16) to the second-seeded No. 10 Loyola Chicago Ramblers on Saturday evening (April 18).
Loyola Chicago opened the match with an early 5-1 run in the first set. The Mastodons evened the score at 14-14 following a 6-2 scoring stretch. Owen Banner and Brody McAfee aided kills during the run. The set saw two more ties, 20-20 and 23-23, before the Ramblers pulled away at 27-25.
Both teams hit their highest hitting percentage in the second set, Loyola Chicago at .458 and the 'Dons with a .414 clip. The opening to the frame was highly contested, resulting in a Purdue Fort Wayne 15-14 lead at the media timeout. The Ramblers pulled away with a 5-1 run that resulted in a 25-20 conclusion.
Loyola Chicago looked to be running away with the third set, holding a 14-7 lead after an 8-1 scoring stretch. But, the Mastodons used a late set surge to fend off the Ramblers. Kaden Fosdick entered the match as a service substitution and started a 10-4 run with a service ace. Brody McAfee capped off the run with an ace to give the 'Dons a 28-26 set victory.
The Ramblers owned the final frame, hitting .455 and holding Purdue Fort Wayne to .207. Loyola Chicago used runs of 9-3 and 5-0 to finish off the match at 25-16.
Logan Muir led the match with 18 kills, and six digs. McAfee notched a career-high 14 digs on a .500 hitting percentage, adding three blocks. Andrew Mayer recorded 10 digs in the match. Hunter Hopkins finished with 47 assists.
No. 19 Purdue Fort Wayne finishes the season at an even 12-12 on the year, 7-9 in MIVA play. Loyola Chicago moves on to the MIVA Semifinals at 19-7, 12-4 in the MIVA.
