BROOKINGS, S.D. - The junior tandem of Emily Spencer and Kendall Wienkes led the IPFW volleyball team to a sweep over South Dakota State 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-19). The dynamic duo combined for 36 of the Mastodons 52 kills.
In the opening set, IPFW (11-12, 3-4) fell behind early, down two at 9-7. Wienkes would get a pair of kills and aces while Spencer added two kills of her own to power IPFW on a 7-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. The Jackrabbits would close the gap to two at 16-14, but the 'Dons were too much, scoring four of the final five points. In the first set, Wienkes and Spencer accounted for 15 of the 16 IPFW kills.
After SDSU took two of the first three points in the second set, it was all IPFW the rest of the way as they opened the match on a 15-7 run, never letting the Jackrabbits get closer than six points.
Set number three was much of the same for the 'Dons. After South Dakota State took the first point, the Mastodons would take the early lead before the Jackrabbits tied the set at 6-6. Once again though, IPFW would get hot as they went on a 10-4 run to take the lead for good.
Spencer led all players with 20 kills and hit a season-high .425 on the night while just missed a double-double, finishing with nine digs. It's the seventh time this season she has reach the 20-kill plateau, and the third time she has done it in back-to-back matches.
Wienkes tied a season-high with 16 kills and led all players with three service aces. Wienkes also hit .444 from the floor, second best this season by anyone with at least 12 attempts in a match. Somer Johnson tied a season-high with seven kills.
Madison Spence finished the night with a game-high 48 assists while Jen Milligan also had a game-high with 14 digs. Hailie Ripley would also tie a match-high with four blocks at the net.
As a team, the 'Dons hit a season-high .349 from the floor while totaling 52 kills on the night, their most in a 3-set match this season.
The win extends the Mastodons all-time record vs. the Jackrabbits to 15-4, including winning 10 of the last 11 meetings.
IPFW will return to the court on October 25 when they host league newcomer Denver for a 7 p.m. match at the Gates Sports Center as the 'Dons look to avenge an earlier loss to the Pioneers.
