MACOMB, Ill. - Behind Andie Lazzerini's second goal of the weekend, and Sam Pavlika's third shutout of the season, the IPFW Mastodons topped the Western Illinois Leathernecks by a 1-0 score in a Summit League Sunday matinee.
Lazzerini scored her second goal of the weekend, helping the Mastodons to a 1-0-1 record over the two matches, and a 2-0-1 record in the last three matches.
The teams played through a scoreless first half, despite 16 total shots (seven from the Mastodons), with 11 of the 16 on goal, with Pavlika picking up five of her match-high seven saves in the match.
The Mastodons, now 4-9-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in league play, wasted little time coming out of the locker room, as Lazzerini put together a long run from midfield, putting a shot into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal just 1:43 into the second half.
The remaining 30-plus minutes remained scoreless for both teams, with Lazzerini's goal providing the lone score of the contest.
Lazzerini led the team with three shots, while Gaby Romo and Delia Soucie each had two, as the Mastodons were out-shot 20-12.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, October 25, when the squad hosts the South Dakota Coyotes in a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
