FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Defending Summit League Player of the Week Andie Lazzerini scored her third goal in the last three games, as the IPFW Mastodons took a second consecutive 1-0 victory, this time over the South Dakota Coyotes at Hefner Field on Friday evening.
The win improves IPFW to 5-9-1 on the season, and 3-0-1 in the squad's last four contests, while South Dakota falls to 5-8-3 and 0-5 in league play. The win is also IPFW's third straight over the Coyotes, as the Mastodons now lead the all-time series 3-0, and have out-scored USD 6-0 in the series.
IPFW out-shot USD 15-to-6 in the game, including by an 8-5 margin in the first half; however, none of either team's shots found the back of the net, as the teams went into the locker room knotted 0-0.
South Dakota seemed to have snapped the scoreless drought with just under 20 minutes to play, but the Coyotes were called offsides, with the Mastodons countering not long after when Mayson Whitman sent the ball through the box which found the foot of Lazzerini who put it past a diving keeper at the right side of the goal for the eventual game-winning score.
With just over 10 minutes to go, the Mastodons looked to have added an insurance goal, but similar to the one taken away from the Coyotes, this one was called offsides, keeping the score at 1-0.
The Coyotes mounted a strong fight, as Danielle Anderson's attempt found the waiting arms of goalkeeper Sam Pavlika, who picked up her eighth shutout of her career, one away from tying the career IPFW record of nine, held by Shannon Lynn (2004-06).
In all, Pavlika had four saves, while her counterpart, Mackenzie Viktor had six.
The Mastodons return to action at home for the final time in the 2013 regular season when the squad hosts the Omaha Mavericks in a 1 p.m. kickoff for senior day.
