Mastodons Out-Last Texas-Pan American 66-60

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - A Pierre Bland running jumper in the lane with 19 seconds left in the game gave the IPFW Mastodons a four-point cushion, and a pair of free throws by Luis Jacobo in his first game of the season iced the contest, as the 'Dons held on for a 66-60 win over the Texas-Pan American Broncs in the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina Islanders Basketball Tournament.
Jacobo scored a team-high 24 points off of the bench for IPFW, while Joe Reed picked up a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double, as the Mastodons out-rebounded the Broncs 48-to-31. Steve Forbes scored nine, while Isaiah McCray poured in eight.
Joe Edwards dished out five assists while pulling down eight rebounds, as the Mastodons had 12 assists against 11 turnovers, the team's fourth straight game with more assists than turnovers.
The Mastodons scored eight of the first 10 points of the game, including three-pointers by Isaiah McCray and Michael Kibiloski, as the 'Dons never trailed in the opening 20 minutes.
The IPFW advantage grew to as many as nine on three occasions in the first half, as late ast 32-23 after a pair of Reed made free throws, before the Broncs got a lay-in with 34 seconds left to send the 'Dons into the locker room with a 32-25 first-half lead.
IPFW pushed its lead back to nine two more times, including on a jumper by Jacobo with 13:52 left to take the score to 41-32 before the Broncs ran off a 13-3 run to take their first and only lead of the game at 45-44 with 9:10 to play.
Trailing for the first time in the game, IPFW ran off a quick 5-0 run on a lay-up by Forbes and a three-point play by Jacobo. Texas-Pan American would tie the score twice more, and trailed by two at 62-60 with 1:30 to play before the Mastodons closed the game on a 4-0 run.
The Mastodons struggled shooting the basketball, hitting just 23-of-63 (36.5%) from the field, and 6-of-23 (26.1%) from long range, but converted on 14-of-18 attempts from the charity stripe for a percentage of 77.8.
Texas-Pan American was led by Javorn Farrell who had 22 points, while Shaquille Hines scored 11.
IPFW returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. EST in the team's final game of the tournament, facing off against Tennessee Tech.
