CHARLESTON, Ill. - The IPFW Mastodons held Eastern Illinois scoreless for a four and a half minute stretch in the second half, and out-scored the Panthers 12-0 during that span, pushing ahead to a double-digit lead, before holding on late for a 71-65 non-conference victory, improving the Mastodons to 6-2 on the season.
Steve Forbes scored a career-high 19 points, hitting 8-of-11 shots from the field, while Michael Kibiloski scored a dozen, and Joe Edwards 11. Pierre Bland and Luis Jacobo each scored eight in the win, while Joe Reed chipped in seven. Bland and Forbes each pulled down eight rebounds, while Bland dished out a game-high seven assists.
IPFW's 6-2 start is tied for the fifth best eight-game start to a season in program history, and is tied for the best eight-game start to a season in IPFW's Division I era (tied with the 6-2 start in 2010-11). Overall, the squad is 12-3 in the last 15 games dating back to last season.
The first half was a tightly contested period with three ties and six lead changes, as each team led by as many as six in the period, Eastern Illinois taking the first six-point advantage of the game when Alex Austin drained a three-pointer with 8:23 to play in the opening half, putting the hosts ahead 20-14.
Down by a half-dozen points, the Mastodons put together a run - 16-4 in all - to push ahead to a six-point lead of their own, capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by Forbes with just under three minutes to play in the opening 20 minutes. The Panthers fought back, out-scoring the Mastodons 5-1 down the stretch of the first half to cut the gap to two at 31-29 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Mastodons held their lead in the second half until the 13:59 mark of the game when the hosts took a two-point lead on a Dennis Green three-point play, and the hosts tied the score at 45 apiece with 11:31 to play before the Mastodon defense forced the EIU drought, using a three-pointer by Mo Evans, a three-point play from Forbes, two lay-ups from Edwards and a pair of free throws from Bland to push the 'Dons ahead by a dozen points.
IPFW would not give up their lead the rest of the way, as the squad held on late for the six-point win. In all, IPFW out-rebounded Eastern Illinois 33-to-16, including a 20-to-5 margin in the second half of the game.
The Panthers were led by Sherman Blanford, who scored 17 points, while Dennis Green scored 16.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, November 29, when the squad faces off against the Illinois Illini in an 8 p.m. EST tip-off.
