EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - IPFW women's basketball shot 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the floor in the second half and senior Amanda Hyde scored a Vadalabene Center record 41 points for the 'Dons as they downed Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 91-74. It was the most points by an individual ever allowed by an SIUE team.
Hyde's 41 points came on 10-of-12 shooting, including three from behind-the-arc, and connecting on 18-of-21 from the free throw line. Hyde also led the Mastodons with eight rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Rachel Mauk had a season-best 20 points, hitting six from long range while Rebecca Bruner also added a season-high 14 points. Haley Seibert also added eight points and six assists.
After SIUE hit a three to open the game, the Mastodons answered with a layup by Bruner and a three from Mur Hagerman to take the lead at 5-3 two minutes in. Hyde would connect on a free throw after making a layup as she was fouled to give the 'Dons a five point lead. IPFW would continue to lead until the Cougars tied things at 19 with 9:16 left in the half on a three. Hyde quickly answered for the Mastodons as she hit a three to take back the lead.
It would be short lived however as SIUE would go on an 8-0 run to take the lead 27-22 with 5:24 left in the half. It would then be IPFW's turn to mount the comeback down 31-26 with 3:42 to play. Bruner would hit a jumper from the corner followed by a pair of free throws. Hyde would then hit a jumper to take a lead, but Cougars hit a layup to regain the lead. The 'Dons would then start raining three's as Rachel Mauk hit a pair and Haley Seibert added another as the Mastodons led things 43-35 at halftime.
Mauk would come out of the locker room on fire as she hit four three-pointers on five attempts to start the half. Mauk and the rest of the IPFW squad would use a 9-0 run to build their lead 19 at 66-47 with 11:13 to play. The largest lead of the game for the 'Dons came when Seibert hit her second triple on the night with 7:05 left to give IPFW a 78-55 lead.
From there it was a battle of free throws as the two teams combined for 22 attempts from the line in the final 4:53 of the game and just four combined field goals made. The Cougars would close the gap to 15, but the Mastodons were too much as they won their first game in Edwardsville since 2000.
The 41 points by Hyde ranks third most in school history, behind the record of 43-points that she shares with Lindy Jones. Also, her 18 free throws made and 21 attempts were both tied for fourth in program history as Hyde moved up two spots in IPFW career scoring, now 13th all-time with 1,154 points.
The previous mark for most points by an opponent allowed by SIUE was by Kandy Crosby of Northeastern who scored 36 against the Cougars back on February 24, 1984. Vadalabene Center record was previously held by SIUE's Misi Clark who scored 40 points on January 20, 2000 against Kentucky Wesleyan.
After the Thanksgiving break, IPFW returns to action when they travel to 21st ranked Michigan State on December 1 for a 4:30 p.m. game.
