Volleyball Wins Final Regular Season Road Game

OMAHA, Neb. - Despite trailing midway through all four sets, the IPFW women's volleyball team rallied back in three of those sets to take their match at Omaha 3-1 (25-18, 28-26, 19-25, 25-19).
Emily Spencer led the Mastodons (14-13, 6-5) on the floor with a game-high 17 kills to go along with 16 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. Hailie Ripley finished the afternoon with a season-high 14 kills as she finished with a .619 hitting percentage and put down three blocks.
After the long bus trip out to Omaha, the IPFW squad needed time to get into a rhythm in the opening set as they trailed early. The 'Dons tied things at 5-5, but would again fall behind for most of the set. Trailing 15-11, the Mastodons put together a string of five straight points to take their first lead of the match at 16-15. After exchanging points, and with the set knotted at 18, the 'Dons would close out the set scoring seven unanswered points.
It was a tough start to the second set for the 'Dons as they trailed early in the set at 3-1. Then, tied at 6-6, IPFW slowly began to pull away scoring four straight points. Leading 15-10, it was Omaha who went on a run, scoring six of the next seven points to tie it at 16-16. Still tied at 19-19, Omaha scored two more to take the lead. From there, the 'Dons battled back to force extra points. The Mavs would have set point at 25-24, but IPFW answered with back-to-back points. Omaha would tie it, but the Mastodons closed out the set on two miscues by the Mavs.
The Mastodons would again have to battle back in the third set as they trailed early. IPFW took a 13-11 lead midway through the set. Later, leading 15-14, the 'Dons were unable to stop the Mavs from going on a six point run as the late comeback would come up short this time.
For the first time on the afternoon, the Mastodons scored the first points of a set as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and then pushed it to 7-2. Omaha would go on a long rally, scoring seven straight points to take a 9-7 lead over the 'Dons. The two sides battled it from there as neither team was able to get much separation. IPFW would take a 16-15 lead, but the Mavs quickly answered back to lead 18-16. This time is would be the Mastodons who would go on a rally, rattling off eight straight points and nine of the last 10 points to take the match.
For the first time this season, the 'Dons were out-hit in a match they won as they went a combined .184 form the floor while the Mavericks finished at a .203 clip.
Madison Spencer dished out a match-high 43 assists while Jen Milligan also had a game-high with 17 digs. Sarah Heckman added eight kills for IPFW while leading the 'Dons with four blocks.
Este Stoffel made 14 digs for the Mastodons while Kendal Wienkes led the team with three aces and made 12 digs. Jaydn' Pegues pitched in with six kills while Somer Johnson contributed five more.
The 'Dons return to action when they host co-league leader IUPUI on Saturday, November 9 beginning at 7 p.m.
