WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Playing their second nationally ranked team in a week, the IPFW women's basketball team was unable to make a comeback at Purdue, falling 91-70 to the Boilermakers, closing out their four-game road trip with a 2-2 record and now sit 4-6 on the year.
Amanda Hyde led the Mastodons with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, hitting all three of her attempts from three-point range and both of her free throw attempts, while also leading the 'Dons with six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Rebecca Bruner was on fire from the floor, hitting 7-of-10 shots to finish with 14 points. Haley Seibert and Mur Hagerman also scored in double figured for the Mastodon, with 12 points respectively while Hagerman dished out four assists while Seibert picked up two steals.
Purdue, ranked 16th by the Associated Press and 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, scored the first basket of the game but the 'Dons hung with the Boilermakers early on as the two sides traded baskets through the opening four minutes.
With the Mastodons leading 8-6, Purdue would convert on an and-one opportunity to take a 9-8 lead, eventually pushing its lead to four. IPFW responded by scoring six straight, on baskets by Rachel Mauk, Bruner and Hyde to retake a 14-12 lead. The Purdue defense would answer, holding the Mastodons scoreless over the next six minutes as they built to a 10 point lead.
Purdue extended its lead with 14 points with 3:43 to play, before the Mastodons answered back, closing the half on an 11-2 run as the 'Dons cut their deficit to 40-35 at the break.
Purdue opened the second half with a layup, before Seibert scored five straight on a three-pointer and a layup to cut the Boilermaker lead down to just two at 42-40. That would be as close as IPFW would get, as Purdue would then go on an 11-0 run, and could not rally back in the 21-point loss.
IPFW shot 26-of-58 (44.8%) from the floor and 11-of-24 (45.8%) from behind the arc. The 'Dons went to the free throw line a season-low eight times, while Purdue was able to connect on 19-of-20 attempts at the line.
IPFW now returns home to take on fellow Summit City team Indiana Tech on December 11 at 7 p.m.
