IPFW Takes Down Ball State 3-1

MUNCIE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team lost the first set on Wednesday night, but came back to win three straight sets to defeat Ball State on the road 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21). The Mastodons are now 5-3 early in the 2013 season.
Three players reached a double figure kill total in the win as freshman Andy Sellan finished the game with a team-high 16. Sellan added seven digs and four blocks to his stat line, ending the game with 18 points. Eddie Rivera played very well against Ball State as he recorded a double-double against the Cardinals with 14 kills and 13 digs.
Anthony Randolph and Ramon Burgos were also involved offensively ending the game with 10 and nine kills respectively. Randolph added eight kills and five blocks and Burgos hurt Ball State in the middle by hitting .500 against the Cards.
Omar Rivera was responsible for setting up the hitters as he ended the game with 45 assists. Rivera also chipped in with nine digs.
IPFW got off to a good start in the first set as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the game. The Cardinals responded by going on a 6-0 run which forced the Mastodons into calling a timeout. Andy Sellan recorded a kill out of the break and the 'Dons would quickly cut the lead to 9-10 after a kill from Ramon Burgos.
Ball State held onto a 2-3 point lead for a long stretch of time and the Cardinals would go on to open up a 22-16 lead after an IPFW attack error. The Mastodons called a timeout and once again scored after the pause, but Ball State grabbed a 1-0 lead as Matt Leske recorded a kill to end the game at 25-21.
Set two was back and forth early until IPFW went on a 3-0 lead which gave them a 7-4 edge. Ball State came back to tie the game at 9-9 and the Cardinals would eventually go up 17-14 after a kill from Kevin Owens. The Mastodons used a run to tie the game at 18-18 and then took a one point lead causing the Cardinals to use a timeout.
Neither team could pull away in the second set as the score remained tied at 22-22. Burgos gave IPFW a one point lead and a Ball State attack error but IPFW at set point. Ball State used a timeout in attempt to kill the momentum but it didn't work as Eddie Rivera evened the match at 1-1.
After trailing very early in the third set, IPFW grabbed the momentum of the match by dominating set three 25-17. The 'Dons went up 10-6 before Ball State burned their first timeout. The lead grew to 17-9 and IPFW comfortably held a 20-12 advantage before finishing Ball State off 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead.
IPFW broke a 21-21 tie in the fourth and final set to win 25-21. Attack errors hurt Ball State and a late kill from Burgos put the Mastodons at match point. Rob Samp served after the kill and an attack error gave IPFW the road win 3-1.
The men's volleyball team will return to action on Friday night as they face Ohio State on the road at 7 p.m.
