FARGO, N.D. -- The IPFW women's basketball team will face the North Dakota State Bison on Saturday night at the Bison Sports Arena. The Mastodons defeated North Dakota State at the Gates Sports Center earlier this season, yet each team sits in the middle of the Summit League standings.
SCOUTING THE BISON
North Dakota State is 9-14 overall with a 5-6 record in the Summit League after defeating Oakland 73-68 on Thursday night. The Bison have now won two straight league contests as they also recently defeated South Dakota 57-50.
Dani DeGagne and Katie Birkel are the top two scoring options for North Dakota State. DeGagne averages 13.1 per contest, and Birkel leads the team at 14.3. With Janae Burich out of the lineup it has been Marena Whittle crashing the glass as she now leads the team with a 7.4 rebounding average.
The Bison are much better at home than on the road as post a 6-5 record at the Bison Sports Arena compared to a 2-9 mark as visitors. Both of NDSU's road wins came in conference play (at South Dakota, at Oakland).
ALL-TIME SERIES
North Dakota State leads the all-time series over IPFW 11-4. The Mastodons played North Dakota State for the first time during the 1996-97 season and the Bison recorded an 83-55 victory at home. The next meeting between the two programs came during the 2005-06 season. The Bison won the first matchup 79-68 in Fargo, but IPFW came back to claim a 77-64 win over NDSU that same season in Fort Wayne. That season was significant as Chris Paul took over head coaching duties of the team on Dec. 21, 2005 after Bruce Patterson resigned from the position halfway through the season. NDSU recorded two more wins over IPFW in 2006-07, the final season that IPFW would play as an independent before joining the Summit League in 2007-08. The Mastodons recorded two additional wins after sweeping NDSU during the 2010-11 season with a 68-55 road win and a 79-46 win at home.
LAST TIME OUT
The IPFW women's basketball team took a 72-62 loss on Thursday night as they were defeated by South Dakota State at Frost Arena. The Mastodons cut a 19 point lead down to six, but the Jackrabbits held on for their 10th Summit League win of the season.
Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 29 points on 10-of-20 shooting. The junior added eight rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes of action.
IPFW had three players record a bulk of their points on Thursday as Rachel Mauk and Erin Murphy joined Hyde in double figures. Mauk hit three 3-point field goals, ending the game with 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Murphy went 5-for-7 from the charity stripe on her way to scoring 14 points.
South Dakota State used 11 players on Thursday night and all but two scored at least three points. Katie Lingle was the driving force for the Jackrabbits as she scored 18 points and controlled the paint with eight rebounds and three blocks. The 'Dons held Megan Waytashek to just six points and Ashley Eide picked up her scoring in the second half with 11 points in the final 20 minutes of action. Eide was solid all-around with seven boards, six assists, two blocks and two steals.
The two biggest factors that led South Dakota State to victory were points in the paint and bench points. SDSU outscored IPFW 44-20 in the paint and 33-3 in reserve points. The Mastodons shot 40 percent in the second half outscoring the Jackrabbits 38-36. South Dakota State however also shot better in the second half as they connected on 60 percent of their tries.
HYDE SCORES 43 AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
Amanda Hyde scored a career-high 43 points in a 78-65 win over Southern Illinois. The 43 points placed her in a tie for second all-time in Summit League history, and also tied the IPFW school record for most points in a game.
43 points puts Hyde in a tie for the highest single-game total in NCAA Division I this season. Shareta Brown of Detroit scored 43 against Lourdes on Dec. 10. Other student-athletes to score more than 40 include Amy Patton of Northern Arizona who scored 41 points against Bradley on Nov. 24, Kevi Luper of Oral Roberts who dropped 40 points against Missouri State on Nov. 29, Diamond Ford of Texas State who scored 40 points vs. San Jose St. on Dec. 29, Alexis Govan of Western Kentucky who scored 40 points vs. North Texas on Dec. 29, and Brittney Griner who most recently scored 40 points vs. Texas Tech on Jan. 30.
IPFW VS NDSU GAME RECAP - JAN. 12
The Mastodons used a 21-2 run in the second half to defeat the North Dakota State Bison on Jan. 10 by the final score of 65-58. Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 22 points, but she didn't score a point during the run - instead it was the trio of Haley Seibert, Erin Murphy, and Stephanie Mauk. Seibert scored eight, Murphy added seven, and Mauk chipped in with six to grab a 15 point lead.
Hyde scored 22 points on 5-of-11 shooting and also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. She knocked down 3-of-4 from distance and did a lot of damage from the charity stripe, ending the game 9-for-10 from the line. Joining Hyde in double figures was Murphy and Seibert. Murphy scored 17 and added three rebounds, while Seibert went for 5-of-9 from the floor to net 12 points.
North Dakota State also had three players in double figure scoring. Dani DeGagne scored a team-high 16 points with seven rebounds and Marena Whittle impacted the contest with 13 points and 10 boards. The final Bison to reach double figures was guard Katie Birkel who ended the night with 11.
IPFW didn't hit a field goal after the seven minute mark in the second half, but quality free throw shooting improved the 'Dons overall record to 6-10.
