Women’s Basketball Ends Year with 59-86 Loss vs. SDSU

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The IPFW women's basketball team took a 59-86 loss vs. South Dakota State in the semifinals of the 2013 Summit League Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. The Mastodons finished the season with an overall record of 13-17.
Erin Murphy scored a game-high 18 points on Monday afternoon. She shot 6-for-13 from the floor and connected on five of her six free throw attempts. Joining Murphy in double figure scoring was Amanda Hyde who scored 15 points while adding three steals and two assists.
Hyde reached 1,000 career points in the loss making her the 16th player in IPFW women's basketball history to accomplish the feat. Hyde struggled from the field, but attacked the basket and was rewarded at the free throw line. She ended the game 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
The deciding factor between IPFW and South Dakota State was the points in the paint category. The Jackrabbits only hit two 3-point field goals the entire game, but they got the ball inside and outscored the 'Dons 58-16 in the paint. SDSU was also good from the free throw line hitting 18-of-20 from the stripe.
Hustle points also went to SDSU as the Jackrabbits outscored IPFW in points off turnovers, second chance points, and fast break points.
IPFW shot 9-for-26 in the first half (34%) compared to 68 percent for SDSU which gave the Jackrabbits a 46-29 lead at the half. IPFW took 11 3-point field goals in each half, but only hit five. The team averages seven made 3-point field goals per game and they set a Summit League Tournament record a day ago with 14.
SDSU had five players in double figure scoring. Leading the way was Ashley Eide who scored 16 points to go along with three steals and two assists. Leah Dietel was also an impact player for SDSU as she ended the game with eight points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
IPFW got good minutes from freshman Courtney Ogle in the loss. Ogle logged 19 minutes of playing time and responded by scoring a career-high seven points. She knocked down a 3-point field goal and also grabbed four rebounds.
The Summit League Championship will be played tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12 between South Dakota State and the winner of the South Dakota vs. IUPUI game.
