Mastodons Drop 3-1 Match to Ball State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team dropped to 9-9 overall after falling 3-1 to the Ball State Cardinals 25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 22-25. The Mastodons are now 3-6 in MIVA competition.
IPFW jumped out 1-0 with a 25-19 win in the opening set, but the Cardinals came back to win three straight to earn their fourth MIVA win of the season.
Andy Sellan ended the night with a match-high 19 kills to go along with seven digs and four blocks. Joining Sellan with a double figure kill total was Eddie Rivera with 12 and Anthony Randolph with 10.
Omar Rivera paced the offensive flow with a match-high 47 assists. He also chipped in defensively with seven digs. The IPFW dig leader on Thursday night was Luis Bertran who recorded 11.
IPFW hit 80 percent in the opening set, but that total fell to 66 in set two and 60 in set three. The team that got off to the fast start won every set. The second set was the most entertaining of the night. The Mastodons fought back repeatedly as the game was tied seven times and it also featured one lead change. Ball State took the momentum to the locker room with a 25-22 win to tie the match.
Neither team served the ball well on Thursday night, committing 14 service errors each. An IPFW service error, followed by a Ball State service ace gave the Cardinals a 22-18 lead down the stretch in the second set which helped them continue on to win the game.
Head Coach Arnie Ball was not pleased as IPFW came out flat in the third set falling 3-0 quickly to the Cardinals. Ball State never trailed in the set as the claimed a 25-19 win.
The fourth set was more of the same as Ball State earned a 4-1 lead to start the game. The Mastodons got within a point at 6-5, but they were never able to take the lead. After falling behind 19-14, IPFW took a timeout and pushed the score to 20-17 before a BSU timeout.
The 'Dons got to 22-19, but match point was moments away for the Cardinals. IPFW burned a timeout at 24-20 and scored two points out of the break before a kill from Greg Herceg would end the match with a kill off an assist from Graham McIlvaine.
IPFW will return to action on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. match against No. 8 Ohio State.
