FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team swept the weekend with another 3-1 win on Saturday night (25-15, 25-27, 25-19, 25-12). The Mastodons are now 12-9 overall with four games remaining on the 2013 regular schedule.
Three players reached a double figure kill total as Eddie Rivera led the team with 14. Andy Sellan ended the night with 11 and Ramon Burgos was on board with 10. Sellan was also very active defensively as he added 13 digs, giving him a double-double performance.
Anthony Randolph and Bryan Saunders each recorded five kills and the tandem of Rob Samp and Nick Smalter each came up with three. The man in charge of setting up the offense was Omar Rivera who ended the game with 42 assists. Rivera recorded a double-double by also coming up with 10 digs.
The Mastodons broke a 3-3 tie in the first set by scoring five-straight to build an 8-3 lead. IPFW held onto the five point advantage midway through the set as a Limestone attack error made the score 13-8.
The Saints used their first timeout of the contest after falling behind 16-9. IPFW served out of the break and scored another point after a team block from Sellan and Saunders. The Mastodon scoring streak came to an end soon after as a service error got the Saints back on the scoreboard.
Ramon Burgos got the team to 20 and the Mastodons would cruise to the finish line with a 25-15 win after another kill from Burgos off the Omar Rivera assist.
Limestone got off to a good start in set two with a 3-0 lead. Eddie Rivera eventually broke the streak with a kill, but the Saint came right back with a point to keep the momentum.
Nick Smalter entered the lineup in set two and came up with two big kills followed by a service ace that would tie the game at 6-6. IPFW would maintain a slim lead midway through the game until a three-point run gave them a 15-11 cushion.
Limestone stormed back to get within two of IPFW at 18-16, but a service error ended their run. Eddie Rivera got the 'Dons to 20 points with a kill, but the Saints came back to tie the game at 23-23 after a 6-3 run.
The Mastodons used a timeout and got to set point after a Limestone service error. IPFW returned the favor with a service error that tied the game once again at 24-24. An attack error from Limestone gave Burgos the serve and the Saints avoided the game-winner with a kill from Kevin Hart.
Andrew Miller put the Saints up 26-25 and head coach Arnie Ball used his final timeout of the set to regroup the team. The strategy didn't work as the match would be tied at 1-1 as the Saints pulled out a 27-25 win with another kill from Hart.
The third set was tight from the very start as the two teams exchanged points back and forth until the Saints scored three-straight to break a 10-10 tie. A service error momentarily stopped the streak, but Limestone fired right back with another kill from Miller.
The Mastodons came back to tie the game a 14-14 and Limestone was forced to call a timeout after the 'Dons earned a one point lead at 15-14. Burgos sent a serve into the net after the stoppage, but Sellan responded by recording two consecutive kills allowing IPFW build a lead. Randolph got IPFW to set point with a kill and the Mastodons would go up 2-1 with a block from Omar Rivera.
IPFW got off to a 7-3 start in the fourth set as Eddie Rivera recorded three early kills to help get out in front. The 'Dons would move on to take a 15-7 edge before a Limestone timeout and Rob Samp would come out of the break to record a kill that extended the lead.
The Mastodons played well down the stretch as Jordan Armstrong and Drew Johnson connected on the game-winner.
IPFW will return to action next weekend with two MIVA games on the road at Lindenwood on April 5th and then at Quincy on April 6. Each match will begin at 8 p.m.
