SCOUTING THE LEATHERNECKS
Western Illinois enters the Summit League Tournament as the No. 5 seed with a 7-9 record in league action. The Leathernecks ended the season on a two-game winning streak by defeating IPFW and Oakland at home which secured the No. 5 seed over North Dakota State who finished with a 6-10 league record.
Saule Kontautaite leads the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game, but the play of Ashley Luke during the second part of the season has Western Illinois playing at a high level. Luke earned back-to-back Summit League Player of the Week honors towards the end of February by averaging a double-double. Her best performance of 20 points and 11 rebounds came at Kansas City as it helped her increase her rebound per game total to 7.1 per contest. She is now the second leading scorer on the team putting in 10 points per game.
Western Illinois has won four out of their last six games with the two losses coming vs. South Dakota State and South Dakota, the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds in the tournament.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The series between IPFW and Western Illinois originally started once the Mastodons joined the Summit League during the 2007-08 season. IPFW holds an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series as they swept the Leathernecks during the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons. These programs have split the regular season meetings since then making this the 13th meeting between the teams. Sunday's game also marks the first time IPFW and Western Illinois have faced each other in the Summit League Tournament.
IPFW won the first ever meeting over Western Illinois 69-57. The game was played in Macomb on Jan. 28, 2008. The Leathernecks got revenge by defeating IPFW later in the year 71-61. The 08-09 season was a clean sweep for IPFW, but Western Illinois took a 58-55 overtime win over IPFW in 2009-10. The 'Dons had won the previous matchup that season by the final score of 62-46. Another sweep took place in 10-11 with IPFW recording 86-74 and 73-54 wins over Western Illinois.
1,000 POINT WATCH
Amanda Hyde now has 973 career points as a Mastodon. She has put together a great season by doubling her points per game average from a year ago (18.7 / 9.5). Hyde is leading the Summit League in scoring which has not been done by an IPFW player since the 2007-08 season when Johnna Lewis-Carlisle average 19.5 ppg.
HYDE NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Hyde averaged 36.2 minutes of playing time per game which placed her fourth overall in the Summit League. She ended the regular season in the top 10 of many statistical categories including seventh in field goal percentage (44.7), sixth in 3-point percentage (37.0) and second in free throw percentage (87.2).
The junior could do more than score as she also ranked eighth in assists (3.1), sixth in steals (1.8), and 17th in the league in rebounds (4.8).
3-POINT SHOOTING
IPFW averages seven 3-point field goals per game. That average is the second-best in the Summit League, and is 30th in the NCAA. Western Illinois leads the Summit League with 7.7 made 3-point field goals per game, and Creighton is the top team in the country at 9.4
FREEBIES
Amanda Hyde is shooting 87.2 percent from the free throw line this season making her the second best free throw shooter in the Summit League. The junior has made 143 of her 164 attempts on the season. She currently holds the 18th best percentage in the NCAA.
The Mastodons rank fifth in the NCAA as a team posting a percentage of 78.6. Utah St. leads the country at 80.0 percent.
MAUK MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Stefanie Mauk is averaging 7.7 points per game this season, but in two games vs. Western Illinois the junior averaged 16.5. Mauk hit 52 percent of her shots from the floor against the Leathernecks and connected on 47 percent of her shots from behind the arc.
