FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team took a 3-0 loss to No. 11 Loyola on Wednesday night (21-25, 20-25, 14-25) moving their overall record to 12-12. With the loss, IPFW now turns to 4-9 overall in MIVA competition.
Eddie Rivera led the team with 14 kills and six digs, but that effort wasn't enough as the Ramblers improved to 19-8 overall. Joseph Smalzer paced Loyola with a match-high 17 kills to go along with three blocks and two digs.
Andy Sellan played well on Wednesday night ending the game with seven kills and five digs. Joining Rivera and Sellan with a solid defensive effort was Luis Bertran who recorded six digs.
Loyola got off to a fast start on Wednesday night opening up a 5-1 lead early in set one. The Mastodons responded to cut the gap to 5-7 after a kill from Andy Sellan and a monster kill from Eddie Rivera would tie the game at 12-12 causing Loyola to use their first timeout of the evening.
IPFW's five-point run would come to an end after the stoppage in part to a service error, but Rivera came back with another kill to knot the score at 13-13. The first lead of the game for IPFW came after a Loyola attack error and the first set would go back and forth from that point forward.
The Ramblers got to 20 points first and Head Coach Arnie Ball used his first timeout of the contest at 20-19. Loyola went on a 3-1 run after the timeout and Coach Ball used his final timeout facing a 23-20 deficit. A kill from Nicholas Olson got the Ramblers to set point and Cody Caldwell ended the first set (25-21) with his third kill of the night.
IPFW played much better at the start of the second set as they scored the first four points of the game. The Mastodons held a 7-3 advantage early, but a 4-1 run from the Ramblers got Loyola within a point forcing IPFW to call timeout.
Loyola tied the game out of the timeout and the Ramblers took their first lead of the contest shortly after at 11-10. The game was close the rest of the way, but a 4-1 run from Loyola turned a 16-15 game into a 20-16 contest. The Mastodons never gave up as the lead was cut to one at 19-20, but one final run gave the Ramblers a 2-0 advantage as they took set two 25-20.
The beginning of set three was highly contested as neither team could get more than a one point lead. The Ramblers would eventually break that trend as a three-point swing would give them a 12-9 lead. IPFW used a timeout, but Loyola continued to score as the game quickly became 16-9.
The Mastodons would make some substitutions, but the Ramblers continued to pile up points as they led 20-12 down the stretch. A service error got Loyola to set point and the Ramblers would take a 3-0 victory after a team block made the score 25-14.
IPFW will return to action for Senior Night at the Gates Sports Center on Saturday, April 13 with a 7 p.m. match against No. 9 Lewis.
