MUNCIE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons closed the 2013 season on Saturday evening against the Ball State Cardinals, falling in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-20).
Rob Samp ended his IPFW career with nine kills and five blocks, while Andy Sellan added eight kills and five digs.
The Mastodons jumped ahead in the middle of the first set, using a 4-0 run to lead by two at 9-7, before the host Cardinals ran off a 5-1 run to lead 12-10, and would not trail again in the set. IPFW closed within one as late as 18-17, before the Cardinals closed the match on a 7-4 run, taking the opening frame 25-21.
IPFW led twice in the second set, at 1-0 and 2-1 before the Cardinals pulled away, and used a 4-0 run to turn an 8-8 tie into a 12-8 Cardinal advantage. The Mastodons got three straight points from Anthony Randolph on a kill, an ace, and an ace, to close the gap to four at 16-12, but four straight Ball State kills put the margin to eight, as the hosts cruised to the 25-17 second-set win.
The Mastodons again led 1-0 and 2-1 in the second set, but would not score on their serve until an Eddie Rivera ace, and a Ball State service error put the Mastodons and Cardinals into a 12-12 deadlock. A 4-1 run by BSU would give the hosts a three-point margin, and the Cardinals would not trail again, winning the final set 25-20.
Omar Rivera gave out 32 assists for IPFW, while Eddie Rivera, Sellan, and Luis Bertran each tied for the team-high with five digs.
Ball State was led by Jamion Hartley who had a match-high 11 kills, with Tommy Rouse picking up 10 digs.
The loss ends the 2013 IPFW season with a 13-13 record.
