FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind goals from Gaby Romo and Brooke Bishir, the IPFW Mastodons (1-1) toppled the Northern Iowa Panthers by a 2-0 score on a bright and sunny Sunday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The goals were the first collegiate goals for each of the players, as Sam Pavlika picked up her fifth career shutout, picking up four saves in the win.
On just the second shot of the contest, freshman Romo picked up a loose ball just outside the box and put it past the keeper towards the left post, providing the eventual game-winning score.
IPFW kept the pressure on, to the tune of seven total first half shots, but neither team would score again as the Mastodons took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Mastodons needed just 17 minutes of second half game play to score, when Andie Lazzerini found the foot of Bishir, who beat the Panther goalkeeper towards the right post.
Northern Iowa threatened throughout the second half, but Pavlika was too strong in goal, as the 'Dons picked up their first shutout of the season.
The Mastodons next take to the pitch on Friday, August 30 when the squad hosts the Ball State Cardinals in the first match of a women's / men's doubleheader at the Hefner Soccer complex.
