FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Freshman Gaby Romo notched her second goal of the year while sophomore goalkeeper Sam Pavlika posted a career high 10 saves to lead the IPFW women's soccer team past Ball State University 1-0 on Friday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Ball State applied the pressure for most of the first half recording seven shots, but Pavlika and the Mastodon defense was up to the task and kept the Cardinals off the board for the first half of action.
IPFW got a few looks at the net late in the opening period, including a scoring chance from Hailey Mariotti in the final minute, but the 'Dons would come up empty as both teams headed into halftime scoreless.
Ball State had the Mastodon defense on its heels again early in the second half continuing to test Pavlika, but the sophomore keeper came up big time and time again.
The momentum shifted though in the 74th minute. Following a Ball State yellow card just outside the box, sophomore Erin Gill sent her free kick in front of the goal where Romo knocked in the eventual game-winner.
Despite being outshot 19-10, IPFW picked up its first win over the Cardinals in ten total meetings.
The women's soccer team returns to action on Monday, Sept. 2 when they welcome Butler University to Fort Waynem, starting at 6 p.m.
