INDIANAPOLIS - IPFW freshman Jadyn' Pegues erupted for a career-high 21 kills, but it was not enough, as the Mastodons were swept by the Illinois State Redbirds 25-16, 25-22, 25-18.
Coming into the game, Pegues had played sparingly, with just three total kills on the season; however, she erupted for 21 kills, tying the single-match three-set record by a freshman, joining Amber Bourne against St. Joseph's on October 1, 1994, and recent IPFW Hall of Fame inductee Fabiana Souza against Evansville on October 12, 2002 with 21 kills in a three-set match.
Emily Spencer added eight kills, while Madison Spence dished out 36 assists. Pegues, Kendall Wienkes, and Este Stoffel each had a service ace, while Spence led the team with nine digs, while Spencer and Jen Milligan each had eight. Sarah Heckman led the team with two blocks.
The Redbirds opened the match with two straight points, and jumped ahead early at 6-3, but the Mastodons fought back to tie the score at seven, eight, and nine. With the teams tied at nine apiece, Illinois State scored the next four points to take a 13-9 lead, and never looked back in the 25-16 first set Redbird win.
The second set saw IPFW lead early at 1-0 and 2-1, before three consecutive points put Illinois State ahead 4-2. The Mastodons would not take a lead, despite tying the score nine times overall in the set. IPFW got within two at 24-22; however, a set-ending kill by Stacey Niao ended the potential comeback attempt.
Illinois State led wire-to-wire in the third set, with the Redbirds jumping ahead 6-1 and never looking back. IPFW closed the gap to four late at 22-18, but Illinois State scored the final three points of the set to clsoe the match with a 25-18 set victory.
The Mastodons return to action on Tuesday, September 17 when the squad travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles in a 7 p.m. first serve.
