Women's Golf Looks to Carry Over Strong Summer into 2013-14

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After a strong summer, both from academic awards and results on the course, the IPFW women's golf team will look to carry over the lengthy list of successes into 2013-14.
Event: Cougar Golf Classic
Course: Harborside International Golf Center
Location: Chicago, Ill.
ABOUT THE COURSE
Harborside International's two exceptional courses, Port & Starboard, were designed by renowned architect Dick Nugent to bring this great tradition of links golf to Chicago. Two time Masters Champion Ben Crenshaw, during the Champions Tour stop here in 2002, compared Harborside to Muirfield in Scotland, the site of 15 Open Championships won by the likes of Els, Faldo, Watson, Nicklaus, Player, Hagen and Vardon.
Harborside's two courses were rated in Golfweek's 2012 Best Courses you can Play per state. Starboard #10 and Port #15 in Illinois were selected, making Harborside the only course in Illinois with multiple listings.
Located just 16 minutes from the downtown loop area, Harborside brings championship style links golf, open to the public, to Chicago's doorstep. No other course in the area can combine the rugged links exterior, with sculpted fairways and manicured greens that make Harborside the finest choice for locals and travelers to enjoy traditional links golf.
ACADEMIC HONORS
Over the summer, the IPFW women's golf team kept picking up honors after honors. Among the academic awards includes earning a perfect NCAA APR award, and the team had the ninth-best GPA in the country among every women's golf team in the country.
Individually, four golfers, Allison Curtis, Alyssa Turney, Brenna Sherwood, and Taylor Lamphier, were named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.
SUMMER RESULTS
Individually over the summer, the Mastodons hit the courses in a big way, competing and succeeding at numerous tournaments around the state. Allison Curtis placed second at the Fort Wayne City Tournament, with Ashton Taft finishing just behind in fourth place. Brenna Sherwood took third at the Elkhart County Tournament, while Curtis also took 23rd, Sherwood 30th, and Taft 34th at the Women's State Amateur Championship.
COACH IS STRONG TOO
The summer successes were not limited to the team alone, as head coach Jessica Steward shot rounds of 70 and 71 - a total of one under par - to win the 2013 Pine Valley Country Club Ladies Club Championship.
