FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite out-shooting the Indiana State Sycamores 20-to-17, and holding an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks, the IPFW Mastodons were out-dueled on a wet and cool Sunday afternoon contest by a 2-1 score.
Of IPFW's 20 shots, seven came from Delia Soucie, while Tessa Edwards had five shots, Gaby Romo four, and two each from Sydney Hoareau and Maya Reyes for IPFW (2-8-0)
The two teams played through a scoreless first 25 minutes, before the Sycamores (4-7-0) got their first goal of the match when Shelby Troyer found Kate Johnson, who beat IPFW goalkeeper Sam Pavlika to the right corner for what would eventually be the game-winning score.
The teams played a scoreless 58 minutes after the initial goal, before Indiana State added an insurance goal with 6:13 remaining on the clock when Sydney Lovelace grabbed a cross in the middle of the box, and beat the keeper to the left side.
Pavlika had six saves for IPFW, while her counterpart, Abby Keller, also had a half-dozen saves.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, October 5, when the squad hosts nationally ranked Denver (19th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America), in a 5 p.m. kickoff in a women's / men's doubleheader at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
