FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's soccer team fell to the 16th ranked Denver Pioneers 4-0 in their Summit League opener on Saturday at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The Mastodons (2-9-0, 0-1-0) kept the high-powered DU offense off the board for the first 30 minutes before a pair of quick strikes put the Pioneers in front for good. Denver's Francesca Garzelloni got the scoring started in the 31st minute with a shot that beat a diving Sam Pavlika to her left.
A few minutes later, the league's leading scorer, Kristen Hamilton, notched the second goal of the match at the 36:03 mark giving Denver a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Early in the second half, freshman Andie Lazzerini made a run into the box looking to cut into the deficit but her shot went just wide.
Denver (10-1-1, 1-0-0) put the game out of reach though in the 66th minute when Nicholette DiGiacomo converted her penalty kick putting the Pioneers up 3-0. DU would tack on another goal in the 72nd minute for the 4-0 victory.
