FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team jumped out to an early lead in the first set of their home opener against Sacred Heart on Friday night and never looked back, defeating the Pioneers in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-20).
The Mastodons, who jumped into the AVCA Coaches Poll at No. 15 this past week, got things rolling quickly in the opening set. Kills by Bryan Saunders and Eddie Rivera helped stake IPFW to an early 4-1 advantage, before a 10-2 run midway through the frame allowed the 'Dons to pull away. IPFW hit .591 in the set, recording 13 kills without an error.
The home team wasted little time once again in set two, building a 5-1 lead on their way to taking the set 25-18. A pair of Andrew Sellan service aces highlighted another 10-2 run by the Mastodons while Rivera slammed down five kills in the set.
Sacred Heart refused to go down without a fight, scoring the first three points of the third set, and maintaining that lead most of the frame. Trailing 17-14, the Mastodons battled back to tie the score with an error by the Pioneers followed by a Scott McNerney ace and Saunders kill. After trading points, a kill by Elon Fyfield gave the 'Dons the lead for good and Ramon Burgos closed out the match with his ninth kill of the night.
Rivera led the way for the Mastodons with a match-high 12 kills while Burgos and Saunders added nine apiece. Omar Rivera dished out 36 assists and Sellan registered three aces. Luis Bertran and Eddie Rivera scooped up six digs each to pace a defense that held Sacred Heart to a .125 hitting percentage for the match. Burgos and Fyfield also added four block assists apiece.
The Mastodons are off until next weekend when the squad travels to University Park, Pa. for a match against No. 11 Penn State on Friday, Jan. 17. A day later the team heads to Loretto, Pa. to face Saint Francis on Saturday, Jan. 18.
