FORT WAYNE, Ind. - When they needed it most, the IPFW women's basketball team got big contributions from Haley Seibert and Amanda Hyde down the stretch, as the pair combined to score the final 13 IPFW points, giving the Mastodons defeated Denver 81-78 in their Summit League home opener.
Hyde scored 19 of her 27 points in the second half, including eight points in the final six minutes. Hyde also grabbed three rebounds and had a team-high three assists. Seibert finished the night with 24 points and three rebounds.
Rachel Mauk added nine points and four rebounds while twin sister Stefanie scored six points off the bench. Ariana Simmons contributed seven points, three rebounds, and two assists for the 'Dons.
The teams battled through the opening 10 minutes as the Mastodons trailed 16-15. The 'Dons followed with an 11-0 run, pushing to a 26-16 lead with 7:52 to go. Denver would end the run with a free throw, but the Mastodon defense held the Pioneers without a field goal the next 2:16.
IPFW pushed its lead to 13 with four minutes to go as Rachel Mauk hit a pair of free throws to give the 'Dons a 35-22 lead. Stefanie Mauk drained a three-pointer with 11 seconds to go, but Denver answered with a layup at the buzzer as IPFW led 45-34 at the half.
After trading baskets to start the second half, Denver went on a 13-2 run over a 3:52 span as the Mastodon lead was cut to three at 55-52.
After Hyde connected on a pair of free throws with 5:53 to play, Denver began to make a run. Trailing by four, the Pioneers out-scored the 'Dons 5-0 to take their first lead since early in the first half with 1:17 left in the game. Seibert quickly answered with a layup, was fouled, and connected on the free throw to give IPFW the lead.
After a Hyde layup, the Pioneers drained a three-pointer with 8.7 seconds to pull within one. Hyde again stepped to the free throw line for the Mastodons, connecting on both free throws to put IPFW up three. The desperation three-pointer by the Pioneers at the buzzer was short, as the Mastodons hung on for the victory.
The IPFW offense shot over 50 percent from the floor for the first time in the last five games, hitting 27-of-52 (51.9%). The squad also connected on 7-of-21 (33.3%) from long range and 20-of-25 (80%) at the free throw line.
IPFW now turns its attention to South Dakota whom they welcome to the Gates Sports Center on January 18 for a 2 p.m. tip.
