Mastodons to Battle In-State Foe IUPUI on Saturday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's basketball squad will look to get back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, when the squad hosts the IUPUI Jaguars in a battle of Summit League in-state rivals.

In the team's last game, a 66-45 loss at Denver that capped a long road trip, the Jaguars were led by 19 points from Mitch Patton, while Marcellus Barksdale scored nine and Donovan Gibbs eight. Barksdale pulled down 11 rebounds, while he and Khufu Najee tied for the team-high with two assists.
The Jaguars jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the game, and led by seven at 11-4 with 12:29 on the first-half clock. The host Pioneers answered and went on a 21-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a 25-11 lead and never trailed again.
On the season the Jaguars have two players averaging in double-figures, with four others within a few points of the double-figure plateau. Ian Chiles paces the team by averaging 15.9 points per game - third in the Summit League - as Patton averages 12.3. Najee averages 9.3 points per game with Barksdale (8.8), Gibbs (8.1), and Ja'Rob MaCallum (7.8) all within striking distance of a double-figure average.
Barksdale is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 7.2 rebounds per game, while Patton grabs 6.0; however, as a team the Jaguars get out-rebounded by an average of 3.3 rebounds per contest. Barksdale also leads the team in assists (73), blocked shots (23), and steals (23).
FREE THROWS CAN BE FREE
When IPFW hit 20-of-21 free throws against North Dakota State, it not only marked an IPFW single-season game-high, it also stands as the 15th best single-game free throw shooting mark in the NCAA this season.

HIGH IN THE RPI
IPFW's current RPI (ratings percentage index) - a mathematical figure used to rank teams based on their records, their strength of schedule, and their opponents' records - stands at 128, the lowest in the history of the Mastodon men's basketball program. Heading ito the season, the previous best RPI for the program was at the end of the 2011 season when the program's RPI was at 180, while the team's lowest this season prior to this week was the 143 that was marked a week ago.
DRAFTED STAR
Former Mastodon standout Frank Gaines was selected with the first pick in the second round by the Maine Red Claws in the 2013 NBA Development League draft. In 21 games with the Red Claws, Gaines is averaging 18.7 points per game, which ranks second on his squad and 10th in the D-League.
MID-MAJOR RANKING
Despite falling in the team's most recent game, the 2013-14 IPFW Mastodons dropped just one spot in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25, now sitting at 24th overall. The highest ranking for IPFW came on December 16 the Mastodons sat 23rd, a week after opening in the poll at 25th, while last week the squad was also 23rd in the poll.
GOOD AMONG INDIANA
IPFW's 15-6 record stands tied for the most wins in the state among NCAA Division I programs, and second in winning percentage. IPFW is tied with Indiana State with 15 wins, and trail just the Sycamores (15-4) in win percentage. Of the 10 NCAA Division I teams in the state, seven have a winning record with an overall state winning percentage of .547 (105-87).
FAST START
IPFW's 15-6 start this season is tied for the third-best 21-game start in program history, and is the best start in IPFW's NCAA Division I era.FREE THROWS CAN BE FREE
STRAIGHT SHOOTER
A look behind IPFW's shooting percentage, which is the 10th-best team total in the country, you will see four regular players shooting at .500 or better. Leading that group is IPFW junior forward Steve Forbes, who shoots 65.9 percent from the field (91-of-138). Forbes' totals are quite good; however, he does not appear in the NCAA national rankings because he is 14 makes shy of missing the minimum of five made shots per game mark in order to be ranked. ESPN, however, has a much less stringent minimum to qualify, and in that ranking, Forbes sits sixth in the country.~ Feel the Rumble ~
