Mastodons Fall 3-1 at Home to IUPUI
10/12/2014 4:44:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, IND. – On a perfect sunny fall afternoon at Hefner Field, the IPFW women's soccer team was looking to continue the offensive momentum from Friday's 3-3 draw with South Dakota State as they hosted in-state foe IUPUI for a Summit League showdown. Unfortunately, the 'Dons couldn't find that same success up front, falling 3-1 after the Jaguars scored two goals in the second half and never relinquished the lead.
IUPUI started the scoring in the fifth minute when IUPUI forward Tori Minnich took control of the ball after a deflection off of an IUPUI defender and blasted it past IPFW keeper Sam Pavlika.
The Mastodons got their chance to even the score in the 27th minute when forward Lindsey Swope was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Fellow forward Taylor Pavlika took the ensuring kick for the home team, burying it in the bottom right corner to tie it at 1.
The Jaguars continued to put heavy pressure on the IPFW defense for the remainder of the first half, but several acrobatic saves by Pavlika kept the score at knotted at one into halftime.
As they did in the first half, the Jaguars came out firing and found the back of the net early, taking a 2-1 lead just four minutes in the second period on a goal by IUPUI forward Krissy Kirkhoff.
The visitors extended their lead in the 56th minute on Minnich's second goal of the day. This time, the Jaguars' leading scorer, used a slide tackle to poke the ball past Pavlika into the bottom right to make the score 3-1.
The Blue and White fought to the end, creating a handful of chances in front of the goal but couldn't put a foot to the ball to finish.
In addition to the goal, Pavlika led the 'Dons with three shots on the day, including two on goal.
Older sister Sam finished with seven saves giving her a conference-best 88 on the season.
The Mastodons finish their 2014 home slate next weekend as they host Western Illinois and North Dakota State at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 17 and 12 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, respectively.
