ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returned 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW finished its non-conference slate with a 2-8-0 record and has opened Summit League play 0-2-1 with five games left to play in the regular season. The 'Dons have been a tale of two teams in the start of conference play, as they came out with a strong defensive effort against the top scoring offense in the league in South Dakota, then exploded on the offensive side of the ball versus South Dakota State in their Summit League home-opener. In the game against the Coyotes of South Dakota, the Mastodons held the home team scoreless through 85 minutes before allowing a game-winning goal in the last five minutes en route to a 1-0 loss. Against the Jackrabbits, the 'Dons knocked in a season-high three first-half goals before eventually playing to a 3-3 double-overtime draw. In the latest contest against IUPUI, neither the offense nor defense could get on track as they fell 2-0 at home to an in-state rival in the Jaguars.
Underclassmen have been leading the way for the 'Dons this year as freshman Kallianne Mogler and sophomore Mayson Whitman are turning in impressive campaigns in their young careers. Mogler currently leads the team in assists (4) and points (8) in addition to co-leading the team in goals (2) with Whitman, Rachel Good, Taylor Pavlika and Lindsey Swope. Whitman is also second on the team with two assists and six total points—all but one assist coming in the last five games. Overall, the Mastodons have spread the wealth on the offensive side of the ball, with five different players scoring at least two goals and 10 players registering at least one point on the year.
Third-year keeper Sam Pavlika continues to improve her numbers in the net each game. She's recorded a 2.53 goals-against-average and a Summit League-best 88 saves in 2014. The junior now has 272 career saves and now ranks second on the all-time career saves list in program history. She needs just 15 more to surpass her single-season career high of 103 that she set in 2013, while 23 more saves would break the program record for career saves of 294.
SCOUTING THE LEATHERNECKS
Western Illinois posted a 2-11-0 record during it non-conference slate and have gone 1-2-0 to through the first two weekends of its Summit League schedule. The Leathernecks opened up league play on a strong note, knocking off North Dakota State on the road 2-1 for just their second win of the season, then followed with losses at South Dakota State (2-1) and to Denver (1-0) at home.
Western Illinois presents an opportunity for the 'Dons defense to get back on track, as they have only scored seven goals total this season. Leading the way is senior midfielder Sarah Wright, who has registered a team-leading two goals and four points in 2014. Five other have scored one goal each and eight total have recorded at least one point on the year. While the overall offensive output has been low, the Leathernecks have scored three of their seven goals in the last three games.
Goalkeeper Victoria Kappel has posted a 2.36 goals-against-average and one shutout so far in 2014. The senior's 70 saves rank second in the Summit League behind Pavlika.
Western Illinois is under the direction of head coach Ted Flogaites, who is in his third season at the helm of the Leathernecks. Flogaites owns a 24-16-2 record in his four years.
