IPFW and Western Illinois Battle to 0-0 Draw
10/17/2014 10:06:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, IND. – On a gloomy night at Hefner Field that featured lots of wind and a little bit of rain, defense prevailed as IPFW women's soccer and Western Illinois played to a double-overtime 0-0 draw. Both squads had trouble sustaining offensive attacks through the air due to the wind, but their respective back-lines dug in to keep the ball out of the net.
While the visiting Leathernecks outshot the 'Dons 18-11, the game was much more even on the field with both teams getting chances in their offensive third—particularly in the second half.
The 'Dons' two best chances to score came in the last 20 minutes of regulation. With the second half winding down, the Blue and White noticeably picked up its intensity in the middle part of the field and put some pressure on the Western Illinois defense.
In the 82nd minute, forward Kallianne Mogler sent a booming cross from the left side that found the head of sophomore Mayson Whitman. Whitman got a good touch on the ball with her forehead and sent it squarely at the goal, but the shot was blocked and eventually recovered by the Leathernecks' keeper.
With 10 minutes to go in the second period, sophomore forward Gaby Romo pushed the ball forward up the right sideline quickly and managed to get a cross off to Mogler, who found herself in front of the goal at 15 yards out. With a defender on her back, the freshman took one swift touch and rocketed the ball towards to the goal. Unfortunately, a Western Illinois defender got her foot out just in time and the shot was blocked.
The two overtime periods followed the same script as regulation had, with both teams getting a handful of offensive opportunities before the defenses eventually won out.
Third-year keeper Sam Pavlika had strong outing in the net as she tied a career-high with 10 saves on the night. Her 98 saves this season are a Summit League best, while her 282 career saves are good for second-best all-time in IPFW women's soccer history. The junior needs just six more saves to break her single-season career high of 103, which she set as a sophomore in 2013.
The Mastodons will wrap up their regular season home slate on Sunday, October 19 as they host North Dakota State for another Summit League showdown. Game time is set for 12 p.m. with Senior Day festivities taking place prior to kick off.
