Mastodons Drop Home Finale 1-0 to North Dakota State
10/19/2014 3:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, IND – The IPFW women's soccer team wrapped up its 2014 home slate on Sunday afternoon, dropping a hard-fought contest 1-0 to North Dakota State at Hefner Field. It was Senior Day for the 'Dons, who honored their lone senior Amber Lawrence prior to game. Lawrence, whose final season was cut short due to injury, started 44 games over her career as a defender for IPFW.
Both teams came out of the gate with tough defense on their respective back-lines as the game remained scoreless for the first quarter of the game. The Bison ended that stretch in the 27th minute as forward Anisha Kinnarath took the ball away from an IPFW defender in the box and buried it in the left corner from 10 yards out.
The 'Dons had several chances to even things up throughout the game, with one in in particular in the first half being inches away from counting. After a cross from the far left side by Kallianne Mogler, Lindsey Swope headed it out of the air and the Bison keeper tried to poke it over the top crossbar. Instead of sailing over the crossbar the ball hit it squarely and dropped straight down, landing inches in front of the goal line. NDSU goalie Seirra Bonham dropped to the ground and fell on it before it crossed the line to end the threat.
Despite out-shooting the Bison 18-11, IPFW couldn't find the back of the net on a day the defense kept them in the game.
Mastodons' keeper Sam Pavlika collected six saves on the day, taking her season total to 104—breaking her single-season career high of 103 she set a year ago in 2013. The mark is also good for best in the Summit League, while the third-year keeper needs seven more saves to break the all-time program record of 294 career saves.
IPFW will wrap up its 2014 regular season on the road, with games at Omaha and Denver on Friday, October 24 and Sunday, October 26 before traveling to Oral Roberts to finish the season on Sunday, November 2.
