SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW finished its non-conference slate with a 2-8-0 record and have posted a 0-3-2 record in its Summit League schedule with three games left to play in the regular season—all on the road. The 'Dons will look to do something they have yet to do this season—get a win on the road. While a road victory in 2014 has eluded them thus far—the defense has been encouraging as they have been solid away from Hefner, particularly through the middle part of the season. The best performance came in their Summit League opener at South Dakota, where they held the conference's best offense scoreless through 85 minutes before giving up a late goal in a 1-0 heartbreaking loss. The offense will look to get back on track as the front line was unable to net a goal it its previous two games after exploding for three and one against South Dakota State and IUPUI, respectively. Overall, the Mastodons have been a tale of two teams during conference play, with the defense playing strong one game while the offense struggles and vice versa, so the focus over the last three games will be to turn in a complete effort on both sides of the ball.
Underclassmen have been leading the way for the 'Dons this year as freshman Kallianne Mogler and sophomore Mayson Whitman are turning in impressive campaigns in their young careers. Mogler currently leads the team in assists (4) and points (8) in addition to co-leading the team in goals (2) with Whitman,Rachel Good, Taylor Pavlika and Lindsey Swope. Whitman is also second on the team with two assists and six total points—all but one assist coming in the last six games. Overall, the Mastodons have spread the wealth on the offensive side of the ball, with five different players scoring at least two goals and 10 players registering at least one point on the year.
Sam Pavlika, a third-year keeper for the 'Dons, continues to improve her numbers in the net each game. She's recorded a 2.38 goals-against-average and a Summit League-best 103 saves in 2014. The next closest behind her is Victoria Kappel of Western Illinois, who has 75. The season mark also ties her single-season career high that she set as a sophomore a year ago, while her 287 career saves ranks second on the all-time list in program history. The junior needs just 8 more to break the program record of 294 career saves, which she is on pace to do before the end of the season.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
Omaha posted a 2-9-0 record during its non-conference slate and has gone unbeaten through conference play with two wins and two draws (2-0-2). Three of its four league games have gone into overtime, with the Mavericks earning the game-winning goal in one of the three contests. The team didn't leave any doubt in its last game, however, as they handled South Dakota State at home in a 2-0 victory on Sunday, October 19.
The Mavericks are dangerous up front thanks to forward Chelsi Rohloff, who leads both the team and the conference in goals (9) and is second in the conference in points (21). The junior also has three assists on the year. Rohloff is complemented in the attack by senior midfielder Anna Sibson, who has registered three goals and three assists in her final collegiate season with Omaha—both marks tied for second on the team. Overall, the Mavericks have been balanced offensively, with nine different players recording goals this season with 12 total collecting at least one point. As a team, Omaha ranks third in the Summit League in goals-per-game (1.4) as they have scored 21 on the year. The play on the defensive side of the ball has been strong, but is an area the 'Dons may be able to exploit as they rank fifth in the league in goals-against average (1.70).
Sophomore Haley Shelton has spent a majority of the season in goal for the Mavericks, starting in all 12 games she has played in the net. She's recorded a 1.63 goals-against-average, while her 67 saves are tied for third in the Summit League behind Victoria Kappel of Western Illinois and IPFW's Sam Pavlika.
Omaha is under the direction of head coach Don Klosterman, who is in his 16th season at the helm of the Mavericks. Entering 2014, Klosterman owned a 204-85-14 record in 15 years.
ALL-TIME SERIES
With Omaha being a relatively new member of the Summit League, while also transitioning to full Division I status, the Mastodons and the Mavericks are only meeting for the third time in series history. Friday's matchup will serve as the rubber match in the young rivalry that will surely heat up in the future as members of the Summit League.
