ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returned 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW finished its non-conference slate with a 2-8-0 record and have posted a 0-2-2 record in Summit League play with four games left to play in the regular season. The 'Dons have been a tale of two teams during conference play, with the defense playing strong one game while the offense struggles and vice versa. In the team's latest contest on Friday night at home against Western Illinois, the defense turned in a strong effort as the back line and keeper Sam Pavlika earned the team's first shutout of the year. The offense couldn't get on track, however, and the game ended in a 0-0 double-overtime draw.
Underclassmen have been leading the way for the 'Dons this year as freshman Kallianne Mogler and sophomore Mayson Whitman are turning in impressive campaigns in their young careers. Mogler currently leads the team in assists (4) and points (8) in addition to co-leading the team in goals (2) with Whitman,Rachel Good, Taylor Pavlika and Lindsey Swope. Whitman is also second on the team with two assists and six total points—all but one assist coming in the last six games. Overall, the Mastodons have spread the wealth on the offensive side of the ball, with five different players scoring at least two goals and 10 players registering at least one point on the year.
Pavlika, a third-year keeper for the 'Dons, continues to improve her numbers in the net each game. She's recorded a 2.48 goals-against-average and a Summit League-best 98 saves in 2014. The junior now has 282 career saves and ranks second on the all-time career saves list in program history. She needs just 6 more to surpass her single-season career high of 103 that she set in 2013, while 11 more saves would break the program record for career saves of 294.
SCOUTING THE BISON
North Dakota State posted a 4-5-0 record during its non-conference slate and has gone 2-1-2 in conference games with three remaining in their Summit League schedule. After opening league play with an overtime loss at home to Western Illinois, the Bison have gone unbeaten over their last four conference games, with two double-overtime ties sandwiched between a pair of 1-0 wins over IUPUI and South Dakota State.
The Bison are strong on both sides of the ball as they rank third in the Summit League in goals-per-game (1.4) and second in goals-against-average (0.96). Leading the way up front is forward Lauren Miller, who has registered a team-best eight goals and 17 points on the year—good for second and third, respectively, in the conference. The sophomore is responsible for four game-winning goals in 2014, including one in the team's latest 1-0 win over South Dakota State. Fellow sophomore Amy Yang has been a key cog in the offensive attack, accounting for five of the team's 12 assists on the year—a mark that ranks tied for second in the Summit League.
Goalkeeper Sierra Bonham, a third-year starter, has had an impressive year in goal for the Bison, starting all 14 games and playing 1,272 minutes in the net. The two-time Second Team All Summit League honoree has posted a conference-best 0.99 goals-against-average with three shutouts and 59 saves in 2014.
North Dakota State is under the direction of head coach Mark Cook, who is in his third season at the helm of the Bison. Cook owns a 23-26-2 record in his three years.
