Personal-Bests Push Mastodons to Strong Finish in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - All seven IPFW harriers competing at the 2014 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic set season-bests, with six of the seven marking new lifetime-best 8,000-meter times, as the Mastodons took first of three NCAA Division I teams at the event.,

The Mastodons topped Lipscomb and Chicago State in the event.

Leading the way for IPFW was freshman Gabe O'Keefe, who placed 40th overall in a time of 26:58.26, nearly two minutes better than his time two weeks ago, and a minute and a half better than his previous 5-mile career-low. Garret Gleckler took 58th in a time of 27:15.52, a career-best, while freshman Bret Unger placed 107th in a time of 27:52.95.,

Senior Paul Smith was the fourth Mastodon finisher in a time of 28:21.74, good for 141st in the field of 350 runners, with Kurt Unger rounding out the Mastodon scoring five with a 143rd place finish in a time of 28:22.27.,

Ryan Curtis bettered his previous career-best with a time of 28:50.90, with Travis Lyons placing 318th in a time of 32:46.92.

After a scheduled week off, the Mastodons will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, to compete in the NCAA Pre-National Meet hosted by Indiana State University.
