Mastodons Wrap Up Season after Falling in Summit League Semifinals
11/14/2014 7:23:00 PM | Men's Soccer
DENVER – The IPFW men's soccer team wrapped up its season following a 3-0 loss to Denver at CIBER Field in the Summit League semifinals on Friday evening.
Battling cold weather in the Denver area, which caused the original game time to change three times prior to the match beginning, the Mastodons were unable to warm up to the hostile environment after suffering from a couple of unfortunate bounces against the Pioneers.
Coming in the 29th minute of play, the Pioneers' received the ball in their offensive zone after Alex Kemp lost his footing in front of the net. DU's Kyle Emerson snagged the ball and quickly passed it to Kosta Kordistos who fired the ball just over the reach of a leaping Cody Schweitzer to put Denver up 1-0.
Denver would put another goal on the board in the 50th minute following a header from Emerson. Coming off a corner kick seconds earlier, both teams fought in front of the IPFW net before Emerson got a head on the ball. Corey Tom attempted to clear the ball, but the referees called a goal as the ball crossed the line prior to Tom clearing it.
The Pioneers were able to put the game out of reach following a Brian Hoyt goal, coming off a free kick from 22 yards out. Schweitzer was unable to make the diving stop to his left as he only managed to get his finger tips on the ball before it went in net.
The Blue and White held a 3-2 advantage in saves in the first half, and a 4-3 advantage for the entire match. Both teams split shots during the first half, each getting four. Denver held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks during the match.
The Mastodons made their third appearance in the Summit League Tournament and first since 2012. The Blue and White also made the league tournament as the No. 4 seed in 2012 and No. 2 seed in 2011.
