EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - A pair of big runs - one in each half - coupled with a career-effort from senior guard Isaiah McCray helped propel the IPFW Mastodons to a 74-71 victory over the SIUE Cougars of the Ohio Valley Conference on Monday evening. With the win, IPFW improves to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 1999.
McCray scored a career-best 23 points - his previous high was 18 - including a baseline dunk that kicked off IPFW's second half and game-deciding run. He also added a career-high 12 rebounds -,his previous high was nine - and tied a career-high with six assists.
Joe Edwards scored 13 points for IPFW, while Steve Forbes added 12 and Mo Evans eight. Evans dished out four assists to go with five rebounds.
The Cougars jumped out to start the game, and held a three-point, 7-4 lead three minutes into the game before the Mastodon defense tightened down, and held the hosts without a field goal for the next six minutes of game-play, pushing ahead to an 11-7 lead with 12:39 to play in the half.
SIUE tied the game at 17; however, a three-pointer from Michael Calder with 9:15 to play gave the 'Dons a lead that they would not give up for the remainder of the half. The IPFW margin reached as many as eight after a McCray three-point play, before the Cougars cut the gap to five at 37-32 at the break.
A three-point play by McCray two minutes into the second half put IPFW ahead by seven at 43-36, before the hosts ran off a 19-4 run, including a stretch of 10 consecutive points, to lead by eight with 11:34 to play in the game.
SIUE kept its eight-point advantage at 59-51 with 8:57 to play before the Mastodon defense once again closed its grip, and held the Cougars without a point for the next 7:15. During that same seven-plus minutes, the IPFW offense found its rhythm, running off 16 consecutive points to turn the eight-point deficit into an eight-point advantage.
The Mastodons kept SIUE at arms-length for the remainder of the game, icing the game at the charity stripe and allowing the Cougars to get within one possession just one time, when Donivine Stewart hit a three-point basket at the buzzer, giving the game its final three-point margin.
IPFW hit 24-of-54 shots for the game - an even 12-for-27 in each of the halves - while hitting 7-of-17 from long range and 19-of-28 from the charity stripe. SIUE was 28-of-66 from the field, 5-of-18 from beyond the arc, while making 10-of-13 free tries.
The Mastodons gave out 18 assists on 24 baskets, while picking up five steals - one each from Mo Evans, McCray, Edwards, Kevin Harden, and Joe Reed.
Stewart scored a game-high 24 points for SIUE, with Kris Davis scoring 12 and Keaton Jackson 10.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, November 21 when the squad takes on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.
