FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Emily Spencer tallied her 2,000th career kill as she led the IPFW women's volleyball team in a sweep of South Dakota State 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-20). The win was the 900th in the history of the Mastodon program.
Spencer led all players with 14 kills in the match to improve her school record to 49 consecutive matches in double figures. Now with 2,003 career kills, Spencer becomes just the second player in both IPFW and Summit League history to reach the plateau.
Somer Johnson finished the night with a match- and career-high five aces to go along with nine kills. Sarah Heckman added six kills to the offensive effort.
Mallory Slyder served up three aces in the match while Kendall Wienkes added a pair. As a team, IPFW finished the night with 10 aces, the most in a three-set match since Sept. 3, 2011 against Wyoming.
Madison Spence dished out a game-high 31 assists and led the Mastodons with eight digs. Anna Wrede led all played with five blocks, including two solo.
The 'Dons dominated the opening set as they never trailed while holding the Jackrabbits to a team hitting percentage of -.200. With the scored tied 2-2 in the second set, IPFW made an 11-2 run to head into intermission up two sets.
South Dakota State held an early led in the third set, but the Mastodon offense was too much, scoring five straight points to take a 9-5 lead and never trailed again.
IPFW will honor five seniors as it closes out the home portion of the Summit League schedule against Omaha on November 8 at 7 p.m.
