Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller On Senior Night

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's volleyball team capped off its Senior Night with a thrilling five-set victory over Omaha 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-11). The victory pushed the Mastodons to 7-7 in Summit League play and 13-16 overall.
Emily Spencer finished her 50th consecutive match in double-digit kills with a match-high 20. She also earned her 16th double-double of the season with 12 digs and added six blocks. Sarah Heckman finished the night with a career-high 15 kills while hitting .414 for the match. Somer Johnson also finished in double figures with 11 kills.
Madison Spence led all players with a match-high 45 assists. Defensively, Anna Wrede made a match-high nine blocks while Kendall Wienkes led the 'Dons with 14 digs.
An early 5-0 run by IPFW in the opening set gave the Mastodons a lead they would never relinquish. The second set saw three lead changes before Omaha scored three consecutive points to take the lead and tie the match.
The 'Dons led from the opening point of the third set as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back. In the fourth set, it was the Mavericks turn to lead from the opening point, holding a 7-2 lead and eventually take the frame to force the decisive fifth set.
Omaha opened the final frame with a 6-3 lead, but the Mastodons fought their way back to tie the score at 9-9. Five consecutive points by the 'Dons gave them the lead for good, before securing the victory on a block by Wrede and Heckman.
IPFW wraps up its home season with a match against Valparaiso on November 11 at 7 p.m.
