Mastodons Drop Game At No. 23/20 West Virginia
12/13/2014 7:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The IPFW women's basketball team held No. 23/20 ranked West Virginia to a season-low 36 rebounds, however, it was not enough as the Mastodons fell to the Mountaineers 82-48. IPFW is now 4-6 on the season.
Keanna Gary led the 'Dons with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Kamilah Carter and Brett Green each came off the bench to score nine points. KeShyra McCarver added five points, five rebounds, and a team-high three assists in her first collegiate start.
The nationally ranked Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead on the back of an 11-0 run. Trailing by as many as 15, the Mastodons knocked down three consecutive three-pointers to pull the score to 27-17 with 7:44 to go in the half. IPFW cut the West Virginia lead to nine points on a triple by Carter at the 6:32 mark. Green connected on a jumper with 49 seconds to play, but the 'Dons trailed 47-28 at halftime.
West Virginia scored the opening basket of the second half before the Mastodons made a 9-0 run to pull the score to 49-37 five minutes into the period. After a Green layup with 12:16 to play, the IPFW offense was unable to connect on a field goal during the next nine minutes as the Mountaineer lead was too much to overcome.
As a team, the Mastodons made 17-of-47 from the field, 6-of-20 on three's, and 8-of-11 at the free throw line.
IPFW returns to the Gates Center for four straight home games beginning with Oakland on December 22 at 7 p.m.
