QUINCY, Ill. – Eddie Rivera and Bryan Saunders paced a torrid IPFW attack with 12 kills apiece as the Mastodons capped off a perfect 4-0 road trip with a straight set victory over MIVA rival Quincy on Saturday night inside the Pepsi Arena.
Quincy started hot, opening up a 5-1 lead to start the match. However, IPFW would come back to tie the score 10-10 before a Rivera ace gave the 'Dons their first lead of the night. The teams traded blows the rest of the set battling to 22-22. Back-to-back errors by the Hawks, though, followed by Saunders' fourth kill of the frame, gave the Mastodons the first set 25-22.
The second set proved to be even closer as neither team would lead by more than two points until late in the stanza. Quincy used a 4-1 run to pull ahead 24-21, but IPFW rallied back fighting off three straight set-points to even the score before kills from Nick Smalter and Ramon Burgos gave the Mastodons a commanding two-sets-to-none advantage.
Saunders, who had a career-high 13 kills last night in the win over Lindenwood, led the charge for the 'Dons in the final set, throwing down five kills en route to completing the sweep.
Rivera, Saunders, and Andrew Sellan – who finished with nine kills and three aces – combined for 41.0 of IPFW's 56.0 points (73%). Omar Rivera distributed 39 assists as the Mastodons hit .371 for the match.
Defensively, Omar Rivera and Luis Bertran had eight digs each to lead the way while Eddie Rivera and Saunders both registered three blocks.
The Mastodons return home to host Lewis on Thursday, February 20 at 7 p.m.
