PRINCETON, N.J. – Trailing two sets to one, the IPFW men's volleyball team battled back to take the fourth and fifth set to claim a 3-2 victory over Princeton in a non-conference match on Friday night inside Dillon Gym.
Senior Eddie Rivera and sophomore Andrew Sellan turned in a pair of season-best performances for the 'Dons – finishing with 18 and 17 kills, respectively – to help fuel the comeback.
Bryan Saunders and Sellan helped stake IPFW to an early 3-1 lead in the lid lifter as the 'Dons would build an 11-7 advantage. However, the Tigers would claw their way back with the help of 12 Mastodon miscues to steal the first set 25-21.
After falling behind 1-0 to begin the second set, Ramon Burgos slammed down three kills to give IPFW a lead. The 'Dons would not trail the again until a late 7-2 run by the Tigers gave the home squad a 21-17 edge. Princeton pushed IPFW to the brink of falling behind two sets to none, but the 'Dons fought off two straight set points and tallied the final four points of the frame to even the match at 1-1.
A kill from Sellan started set three, but that would be the only lead of the stanza for the Mastodons. Princeton followed with three consecutive points and would never trail again. The Tigers never led by more than three, and Nick Smalter landed a kill to tie the score at 24-24. Devin Stearns and Pat Schwagler would nail down the set for the Tigers though with back-to-back kills.
Looking to avoid their second straight defeat, the Mastodons erupted in the fourth. Eddie Rivera led the way with seven kills in the set while Saunders chipped in four more as the 'Dons stormed out to an 18-11 lead. Princeton threatened to come back with a short 4-0 burst, but IPFW held on to force a decisive fifth set.
Princeton jumped out in front 6-4, but the 'Dons responded by hitting a scorching .421 in the set to climb out of the early hole, and Sellan hammered home the final kill of the night to seal the win.
Eddie Rivera added a team-high 12 digs to his 18 kills to record his second double-double of the season. Saunders and Smalter had nine kills apiece while Smalter also picked up 10 digs. Omar Rivera stuffed the stat sheet with 52 assists, nine digs, and five blocks.
IPFW finished the night with 65 kills and a .236 hitting percentage compared to Princeton who ended with 58 kills while operating at a .229 clip.
The Mastodons are right back in action tomorrow night when they travel to George Mason with first serve set for 7 p.m.
