Volleyball Falls to Rival Cardinals In Four Sets

MUNCIE, Ind. - The 12th ranked IPFW men's volleyball team fell to archrival 13th ranked Ball State 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23).
Andrew Sellan led IPFW, tying a career-best and a season-high with 20 kills and a season-high 12 digs for his second double-double of the year. Eddie Rivera finished the night with 13 kills, seven digs, and three blocks.
Omar Rivera earned his third double-double of the season with 46 assists and 11 digs. Luis Bertran also finished in double-digits digs with 10.
IPFW never trailed in the first set, opening with an early 4-1 lead. Ball State cut the lead to 6-5 before the 'Dons answered with a 5-0 advantage to take the lead 10-5. The Cardinals were never closer than three points the rest of the way as IPFW closed out the set with a 7-3 run.
The Mastodons led just once in the second set, 4-3. Midway through, Ball State used an 11-3 run to put the set out of reach.
The third set saw IPFW take two early leads at 8-7 and 10-9. A four-point swing by the Cardinals gave them the lead for good, as the 'Dons were unable to pull any closer than two down the final stretch.
In the fourth set the Mastodons fought their way back after trailing 10-5. IPFW chipped away at the Cardinal lead, tying the set 16-16. The teams battled back-and-forth for the final points, but with the score tied 23-23, Ball State connected on two straight points to take the set and the match.
IPFW is back in action on March 14 when the Mastodons host Lees-McRae at 7 p.m.
