Groninger Leads Men's Golf to 14th Place Finish

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Playing in the largest field of the year, the IPFW men's golf team placed 14th out of 17 teams at the 54-hole Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, shooting a two-day score of 315-328-322=978.
Hosted by George Mason University at the par-72 El Campéon Golf Course at Mission Inn Resort, the course was played at 6,884 yards. Virginia Tech won the team title with a three-round score of 875 while Trevor Cone of Virginia Tech took home the medalist honors, carding a 211 for the weekend.
The Mastodons sat two strokes back of Florida A&M heading into the final round to finish two strokes ahead of the Rattlers.
Jacob Groninger led IPFW finishing in a tie for 18th place out of 98 golfers, shooting scores of 78-76-74=228. Daniel Shepard shot a season-low 74 in the opening round and finish the final two rounds with scores of 79-81=234 to tie for 32nd. Carter Dornseif tied for 85th, carding rounds of 80-90-82=252. Sitting in 88th place was Devin Jenkins, firing rounds of 74-83-87=254. Dan Wert rounded out the team scoring for the 'Dons, shooting a three-round score of 83-95-85=264, placing 92nd overall.
Four Mastodons played as individuals, led by Drake Devereux who finished in a tie for 78th with rounds of 84-77-80=250. Oliver Gibson finished in a tie for 88th shooting a tournament total 85-86-86=257. Logan Barker, playing in his second tournament of the season, finished 93rd carding scores of 90-86-88=264. In 96th place was Sam Hardwick who finished with a two-day total of 93-90-90=273.
IPFW returns to the course on March 23 for the three-day Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
