Women's Basketball Falls in Tournament Opener to Pioneers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The IPFW women's basketball team rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to lead in the second half; however, the strong Denver Pioneer squad answered the call, and rallied to top the Mastodons 79-73 in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Summit League Tournament.
Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 28 points for the Mastodons (15-14 overall), hitting 11-of-21 shots from the field and 6-of-7 free throws, while also pulling down five rebounds and giving out three assists. With her seven free throw attempts, Hyde set a new single-season Summit League record with 236.
Haley Seibert scored 16 with a game-high seven assists, while Stefanie Mauk scored 10, Rachel Mauk 9 and Rebecca Bruner 8.
IPFW began the game with an early lead as Bruner and Hyde connected on back-to-back jumpers, giving the 'Dons a 4-2 advantage two minutes in. Denver followed with a 19-9 run over a 7:05 span to take a 21-13 advantage with 10:57 to play in the half.
Bruner closed out the first half with a jump hook from outside the paint, as IPFW trailed 35-28 at halftime.
In the opening 4:35 of the second half it was all IPFW, as the 'Dons used a 14-2 run to take its first lead of the game since early in the first half. The Mastodon defense held the Pioneers without a basket until the 13:40 mark, as IPFW led 44-39.
Denver answered with a 15-5 run, holding a 52-49 lead with 8:07 left in the game. The Mastodons did their best to match the Pioneers shot-for-shot, but a 10-0 run in a stretch of 1:39, gave Denver a 70-57 lead with 3:13 to play.
The Mastodons scored on their next six possessions, cutting the Pioneer lead to 71-69 with 48 seconds remaining, but were unable to connect on the game-tying basket in the final seconds.
IPFW finished the night shooting 29-of-64 (45.3%) from the floor, 8-of-26 (30.8%) from beyond the arc, and 7-of-11 (63.6%) at the charity stripe.
The 645 points this season by Hyde moves her into third place in IPFW history and fifth in league history. She also moved into ninth place on the Summit League career scoring list with 1,651 points.
Seibert moved into second place in single-season school history and fifth all-time in the league with 88 three-pointers made.
As a team, IPFW set a school record with 262 three-pointers, third most in Summit League history.
IPFW now waits to see if it will get a bid the one of three postseason tournaments.
