Groninger Leads After First Round of The Summit League Championship

KELLER, Texas - IPFW men's golfer Jacob Groninger tied a career-low score of 69 in the first round of The Summit League Championship to lead the field of 40 players by one stroke. As a team, the Mastodons sit in eighth place with a day one score for 316.
Hosted at the par-72 Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club, the tournament is being played at 6,953 yards. Denver holds a four-stroke lead over the field, carding a 292 on the opening day.
Groninger is one of three golfers to finish the round under-par, as he holds a one-stroke lead over Patrick Frodigh of Denver. Groninger birdied all five of the par-5 holes on the course; Nos. 5, 7, 12, 15, and 18. He was also the only player to birdie the par-4 No. 1 hole. ?The 69 by Groninger is the second lowest opening round score by an IPFW golfer at the Summit League Championship behind only Bruno Carvalho's 66 in 2012.
Only three strokes separated the next three Mastodon golfers. Tied for 34th after the first round is Daniel Shepard who carded an 81 on the day. One stroke back in 36th place is Dan Wert, shooting an 82 for the round. Carter Dornseif fired an 84 in the round to finish in 38th place. Devin Jenkins rounded out the scoring for the Mastodons, shooting an 88 on the opening day to sit in 40th place.
The second round of the Summit League Championship will begin at 9:30 a.m. (ET) off the No. 1 tee.
