'Dons Chip Into Third Place After Day Two of League Championship

KELLER, Texas - A 23-stroke improvement - tied for the biggest first-to-second round improvement at the Summit League Championships since 1992-93 - has propelled the IPFW men's golf team from eighth into third place leading up to the third and final day of the 2014 Summit League Championships. The Mastodons fired a 5-over-par 293 in the round, for a two-day total of 609.
Hosted at the par-72 Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club, the tournament is being played at 6,953 yards. IUPUI leads by eight strokes, finishing day two with a 592. Rob van de Vin of IUPUI sits atop the 40-player field with a two-round score of 2-under-par 142.
As a team, IPFW combined for 18 birdies on the day. The 293 is the third lowest round by a team at the Summit League Championships since it moved to Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club, and is the Mastodons second lowest round of the season.
Jacob Groninger dropped back to second place after shooting a 5-over-par 77 on the day, to sit at 2-over-par 146 for the tournament. Groninger started his morning 1-under-par on the front nine, before capping off his round with a birdie on the par-5 No. 18 for the second straight day.
Dan Wert led the Mastodons on the day, firing a career-low 2-under-par 70, 12 strokes better than day one. Wert recorded five birdies on the round, four of which came on the front nine, including the par-3 171-yard No.8, of which he is one of three golfers to birdie during the tournament. After two rounds, Wert sits tied for 14th place with a 152.
Daniel Shepard finished the day tied for 20th place with a 155 for the tournament. Shepard carded a 2-over-par 74 on day two, improving by seven strokes and tying a season-low, recording birdies on Nos. 7, 10, and 17.
Carter Dornseif had a 12-stroke improvement from the opening round, shooting a season-best even-par 72 for the round. Dornseif is tied for 23rd heading into the final round with a 156. On the front nine, Dornseif finished at 2-under-par, recording birdies on Nos. 2, 6, and 7. Dornseif closed out his round with a birdie on the par-3 No.17, one of only two players in the round to do so, joining Shepard.
Closing out the scoring for IPFW is Devin Jenkins who carded an 83 for the round, a five-stroke improvement from day one. Jenkins carded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6 and 7. For the tournament, Jenkins sits in 39th place with a two-day score of 171.
The final round of The Summit League Men's Championship will begin at 11:54 a.m. (EDT) off the No. 1 tee, Wednesday, April 23 at Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club.
