CHICAGO - The season for the IPFW men's volleyball team came to a close on Wednesday evening as the Mastodons fell to top ranked Loyola Ramblers in the MIVA Tournament Semifinals by a 3-0 score, 27-25, 25-19, 25-21.
Andy Sellan tied for the match-high with 13 kills, while senior Eddie Rivera added nine in his last time in the IPFW Blue and White to go with his three service aces. Omar Rivera dished out 31 assists, while he and Sellan tied for the team lead with five digs.
After a kill by Sellan to open the match, the Mastodons used a strong serving effort from Eddie Rivera to run off four more straight points - two came on service aces - while Albert Klimek also added a kill, putting IPFW ahead 5-0. IPFW kept its lead until the host Ramblers ran off a 9-2 run to lead by one at 15-14.
The Mastodons would not back down from the Loyola run, and forged ahead after a Rivera kill to a 24-23 lead, and serving for set point; however, a kill and a service ace by Nicholas Olson put the hosts ahead 25-24. A Rivera kill knotted the score at 25, but back-to-back Loyola kills gave the Ramblers the 27-25 opening-set win.
IPFW led early in the second set, and saw the match score tied at five before the hosts ran off five of the next six points and the Mastodons were not able to tie the score again in the set. A late IPFW run, behind a kill from Klimek and strong serving from the senior closed the gap to as few as five at 24-19, but an error ended the set, putting the hosts ahead 2-0 after the first two sets.
Loyola jumped ahead to a 7-1 lead in the third set, and the Mastodons were never able to fully catch-up, despite closing the gap to one at 16-15 on an attack error. After the lead was cut to the slimmest of margins, Loyola ran off five straight points, and held on late for a 25-21 third-set victory.
The loss closes the IPFW season with a 21-7 overall record, as each of the team's seven losses have come against teams currently ranked in the AVCA Top-15.
