Men's Basketball Falls Short in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. - Despite a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double from senior Steve Forbes, the IPFW men's basketball team fell victim to a late Oral Roberts 7-0 run, dropping a 62-58 contest against the Golden Eagles on Saturday evening.
Forbes picked up his fifth double-double of the season, while Joe Reed scored nine and Michael Calder eight off of the bench. Behind Forbes' 10 rebounds, the Mastodons out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 37-to-32, as Isaiah McCray added six boards and Reed five. Joe Edwards dished out a team-best three assists, with Reed picking up a pair of steals.
The Mastodons hit 23-of-54 (42.6%) from the field, and 5-of-14 (35.7%) from long range. Oral Roberts converted on 38.5 percent (20-of-52) overall, and 9-of-20 (45.0%) from beyond the arc. The big difference in the game came at the charity stripe, where Oral Roberts was 13-of-17 - going 4-of-4 down the stretch to ice the game - while the Mastodons hit 7-of-9.
IPFW jumped out quickly with five points on a Forbes dunk and a Max Landis three-point basket and led by one at 9-8 after a pair of Free free throws before the Golden Eagles scored six straight points to lead 14-9 with 10:46 to play in the half. In all the lead changed hands six times and was tied four times in the opening 20 minutes, as the half's final lead change happened as the Mastodons closed the period on a 9-2 run, taking a 27-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Golden Eagles hit a three-pointer out of the break, cutting the gap to one, before the 'Dons scored six straight on lay-ups by Evans and Landis, and a steal-and-dunk by McCray, pushing IPFW to its largest lead of the game at 33-26 with 16:31 to play. Oral Roberts immediately responded with a 16-4 run, turning its seven-point deficit into a five point advantage four and a half minutes later.
IPFW responded with an immediate 5-0 run to tie the score at 42 with 10:34 to play, and from that point until the last minute and a half, the largest lead gained by either team would be four points. Forbes hit three straight lay-ups for IPFW, the final two tying the game at 51 and 53, respectively; however, the Golden Eagles scored the next seven points to take a seven-point lead at 60-53 before the Mastodons cut the gap to four at the final buzzer, with Calder giving the game its final score with a lay-in at the final horn.
Oral Roberts was led by 15 points from Obi Emegano, who needed 16 shots (4-of-16) to reach the point total, while Aaron Young scored a career-high 14 points.,
The Mastodons return to Fort Wayne before making a trek to Brookings, South Dakota to take on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in an 8 p.m. ET tip-off at Frost Arena.
