1/21/2015 11:08:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Six IPFW players scored seven points or more, but it was an early South Dakota State run that set the stage for an 82-53 Jackrabbit victory.
Steve Forbes and Mo Evans each scored nine points, Jure Gunjina scored eight, with Joe Edwards, Max Landis, and Michael Calder each scored seven. Forbes pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, with Edwards adding six and the Mastodons out-rebounding the Jackrabbits 34-to-33. Landis led the team with four assists, as 11 of the team's 20 baskets in the game were assisted.
IPFW hit 20-of-50 shots (40.0%) from the field, and 8-of-20 (40%) from long range. South Dakota State hit 30-of-58 (51.7%) of its shots from the field and 7-of-17 (41.2%) from beyond the arc.
The Jackrabbits scored the first seven points of the game, and converted on five of its first six shots, jumping out to a 13-5 advantage through the first six minutes of the contest.
The Mastodons closed to within as few as five on a Michael Calder free throw line jumper, taking the score to 17-12 before the Jackrabbit offense got a rhythm, scoring 19 straight points and pushing ahead to a 36-12 lead six minutes later. Trailing by 28, the Mastodons scored back-to-back baskets from Landis and Brent Calhoun, cutting the gap to 24 at 42-18 at the break.
IPFW closed the gap to as few as 22 in the second half; however, that would be as close as the team would get in the 29-point loss.
Cody Larson, Deondre Parks, and Jake Bittle each scored 12 points for the Jackrabbits to lead the team.
The Mastodons return home on Saturday, January 25 when the team hosts North Dakota State in a rematch of the 2014 Summit League Championship game.
