Balanced Attacking Leads No. 10 Mastodons to Third-Straight Sweep

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The 10th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team earned its third-consecutive sweep following a win over MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) foe Quincy. The Mastodons finished 25-16, 25-20, 25-21, improving to 7-2, 2-0 (MIVA), while the Hawks fell to 5-4, 0-2 (MIVA).
The Blue and White played with balanced attacking as Alex Harthaller and Nick Smalter each earned 11 kills. Harthaller led the 'Dons with four aces, as the team combined for nine serving aces. Luis Bertran earned a career-high seven assists, while adding nine digs.
The Mastodons jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set following two-straight aces from Harthaller. The Blue and White would take a seven point lead later in the set following Harthaller's third ace, making it 20-13. Both Smalter and Ramon Burgos earned four kills during the set, while Bertran, Omar Rivera, and Andrew Sellan each had three digs. The 'Dons combined to hit .412 during the opening set.
The second set saw IPFW hold a slim 9-6 lead after the first 15 points. The 'Dons would continue to hold a steady lead throughout the set, eventually going up 16-10 following a kill from Burgos. Quincy fought to stay in the set, but a Harthaller kill would seal it for the Mastodons 25-20.
IPFW controlled most of the third set, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. The 'Dons continued to roll in the third set, going up by as many as 10. The Hawks battled back in the final set following a late 10-2 run, cutting the Mastodon lead to 22-21. The Smalter would wrap up the match for the 'Dons with two-straight kills as a part of three-consecutive points for IPFW.
For the match, the Mastodons outscored the Hawks 43-26, limiting Quincy to a .169 attack percent. IPFW held a 9-2 advantage in aces, while Quincy managed a 32-26 advantage in digs.
The Mastodons return to action when they travel to in-state rival Ball State on Thursday, February 5. The match against the No. 14 Cardinals is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
